Tinned Fish

Hi
I am trying to add more fish into my diet, and as fresh fish is so expensive I thought I would look at tinned fish (sardines, mackerel, pilchards).
Where would be the cheapest to buy this from?
Also does anyone have any recipes?
Many thanks

Home Bargains and B&M stores can offer some bargains on tinned fish products, also Sainsbury's when they are clearing lines. Lidl and Aldi also might be worth a look. Not tinned, but hubby buys herrings in sauces (jars and tubs), possibly tinned also from Lidl.
Ikea had an offer on a few weeks back on jars of herrings in sauces I believe, may be still on??
That's a few, hope others can give more options.
Recipes??
How about sardines on toast??
Just kidding, hubby normally has them with salads.

Hi Fizzy...Princes Pilchards from Tesco 84 for 425g is on my list. Also Value Tuna 185g 45pence.
Frozen fish fillets from Sainsbury 520g is £2 but same thing in Tesco is £1.92p
Still researching fish fingers and fish cakes and battered stuff.
Tesco Pink Salmon 212g 99pence.
Only know Tesco Sains and Lidl. Lidl tinned fish is more expensive.
If it's a protein boost you're thinking of...Pigs Liver is a good buy about £1.20kg tho high in cholesterol0 -
I would check your stores clearance or dented tins section too. My tesco takes off 25-50% for dents and they put discontinued tinned lines there . Last year i cleared them out of tins of 9p bbq mackeral and 19p finest sardine fillets in oil. Still got some in cupboard!0

One thing I would warn you off would be Smart Price tinned tuna, it's horrible!
I buy a lot of frozen fish in Aldi which is great quality. Likewise their tinned tuna and salmon.0 -
check tesco my local one had lots of fish rtc on shelf as discontining brands. or try poundstretcher? good to know website has good recipes cheaper than buying magazine. hope this helps. ie sild was 1.19 scanned as 29p a tin and 19p sardines at mr t's.0

Lidl mackerel in spicy tomato or sunflower oil is 65p per tin. Can't remember the size but I think they're the same size as the Princes tins - I have a feeling that they might come from the same factory. I can recommend the mackerel as being very moreish and yummy - I normally have them straight from the tin with couscous and some veg (peppers, spinach, cucumber - whatever I've got in). The spicy tomato version saves on having to make a separate sauce.
I've also tried Lidl sardines and don't rate them - accidentally bought it instead of mackerel and forgot that I'm not really a fan of picking out little bones. If you don't mind that, I think the price is slightly cheaper than the mackerel.2011 December - No Buying Unnecessary Toiletries - UUs: 5 In: 5

Not quite sure what this is called as I got the recipe many years ago
Peel & slice potatoes very thinly
Peel & slice onion, carotts, whatever you fancy .... You can throw anything in the pot.
Sardines or pilchards
When all is prepared, put in layers in an oven proof dish with 1-2 pints of stock, this can be just water, or a veg/Oxo cube can be added. Cook for 1 hour in the oven.
My husband finds this revolting, but I absolutely love it. It's cheap, good for you, & very filling. Enjoy!0 -
Does anybody know the current price of tinned salmon at Aldi?
If so, what type and weight of tin please?0 -
Poundland and 99p Stores both sell tinned fish and I would check in discount stores first before going to supermarkets. MySupermarket would be useful for comparing offers too.
ASDA does 2 portions for £4 on a lot of fresh fish at the fish counter. You could also look for reduced stuff and YS prepacked to freeze.
Please please don't buy YS fish at ASDA which has been left on the edge of the chilled cabinet so that it's not chilled. You or a member of your family could get food poisoning. I don't know why they do this, it's not a safe food hygiene practice. They do it with sausages too and yes I had food poisoning0
