Personally I wouldn't use a rechargeable battery in any low drain equipment such as smoke alarms and remote controls. They aren't designed for that, but rather for high drain equipment such as torches, motorised toys, etc.
For low drain devices alkaline or zinc chloride should be the batteries of choice.0 -
Procell are generally excellent - designed for industrial/commercial use (used extensively in entertainment/TV industries for instance)0

I've heard it said (though never from an original authoritative source) that this is not recommended, because of the "off the edge of a cliff" discharge characteristics of rechargables.
Alkaline cells have a much flatter discharge rate as they die, giving the smoke alarm plenty of time in which to do the annoying bleeping...
