refund from HMV

Options
4 days ago I purchased a technology item for my son for xmas. I have just found out that my exhusband has also bought him a similar item. I need to return for a refund. However, I understand it is not HMVs policy to offer refunds. We're talking a couple of hundred pounds here - what can I do?

HMV (from what I see) only offer exchanges within 21 days, so your appealing to their good nature for a refund (there is no entitlement). Ask for it to be put on a gift card or something, maybe they would be more willing to do this..

    Otherwise, sell it on ebay?
  • No, I haven't actually asked them yet - I'm going to try tomorrow. Just wondered if there were anyone else been in similar situation.

My son actually prefers the item his dad has bought!!!

Usually stores will allow you to return in circumstances such as these and usually offer an extended period of return (usually end of January if i remember right) in which to return items.

However, technically as you have no statutory rights in these circumstances, you are relying on their goodwill. Your best bet is to go into the store, explain - politely of course - and ask whether a refund would be possible.

Alternatively, ask your exhusband if he can return his - or even work out who paid the least and return the more expensive one (if possible of course).

I would advise when buying items to always shop around a little to find out who offers the best deal. I managed to get over £100 off my newest mobile phone by doing this.

    Their website states:
    Gifting Returns Policy
If you are buying an item for a gift from 1st November 2010 through to 31st December 2010, then you may return the item in perfect condition up to January 31st 2011 for a refund. For full details on returning items, please see below. We will revert to our standard 21 day returns policy from 1st January 2011.

However it doesnt say whether this is a online only policy or applicable to stores too. Although as above in my other post, its normal for stores to extend their policy for christmas period (at least the stores round here).

  • You can find a link to the retail 'stores refund policy here': http://hmv.com/hmvweb/navigate.do?ctx=4676;-1;-1;-1;-1&pPageID=5052

    This states:
Technology Returns We will exchange any unwanted technology product provided it is returned unopened within 21 days in perfect condition accompanied by a receipt. Should your technology product develop a fault or prove defective within 1 year of its date of purchase, we will happily offer you a like-for-like exchange.

Take the item pack (assuming it's unopened) & point the store at that page (I got to it by doing a google search for hmv stores return policy).

I saw that, it's online only,

"The details within this page relate to purchases made online on hmv.com only, and are not applicable to purchases made in one of our hmv uk retail stores.

    [snip:gifting returns policy]"

The instore one is here & doesn't include this option (unless each store will be operating their own policies). But nontheless it's still worth checking.

  • 2012 and nothing has changed, my daughter and I returned £200 worth of faulty goods and after, no exageration, 45 mins wait we were told that although it is slow to load it is not faulty, refund refused. The store's policy was clearly stated on the wall and within 21 days maybe returned if unwanted. To the store managers credit he was very professional and it was a calm conversation. We argued that if he insisted it was not faulty then, as it was bought 7 days earlier, we could perhaps return under their unwanted goods policy. After a lengthy discussion we asked to take the goods away and that we would seek further advice. A refund was given but my daughter was very upset and not how she would have wished to spend her day off.
