  • Thanks for all the replies. I asked the question about overheating after being warned by a computer repair chap that has done some work on a desktop.

I am looking for a robust laptop for day to day internet use, writing documents and saving pics.

Thanks for the advice on best brands. I'm leaning toward dell and hoping for some bargains are around post Christmas.

a lot of the time laptops overheat because 1. they are used on beds/sofas/laps that block the airflow and cause it to overheat or
    2. the fan vents/radiator have become blocked by dust, I open my laptop up 2/3 times a year and clean the fan and vents/radiator of all the dust (I'm literally shocked how much dust it collects each time) if I left it, my laptop would basically be dead by now.

Absolute rubbish that 17" laptops overheat. Bet that computer shop didn't have any to sell, so was pushing nice cool 15" ones instead!

If you sit in bed with the laptop on the duvet then it will overheat (because you block the vents).

Use it on a desk etc and its fine.

Have a look at a laptop brand called "Lenovo", its the 2nd largest computer manufacture in the world and is partners with IBM.

I have laptops from Dells to Compaq / HP. I can honestly say that the current Lenovo ive got is amazing. The build quality is great, no rattles etc. Price was amazingly cheap due to a cashback offer.

Have a good look around before buying!

    Stay away from Acer.
My Support is provided "as is" without warranty of any kind. While a knowledgeable and skilled professional, I cannot offer any guarantee as to the consequences of the Support provided. Should the Support cause damage or loss of any kind, I shall not be held liable.
  • normally its bad design why they over heat and even more importantly bad usage like people that stick there laptops on a quilt in bed and there for blocking all the air slots.

acer make really good laptops, stay away from pcworld own brand laptops (sold as advent and philips) IMO

see it is just yours/mine opinion, there is no legitimate reason why you should stay away from acer, or any other brand.

my laptop is acer had it 3 years and it is still perfect no rattles and this is with very heavy usage.

I've had Dells for a long time, but currently have a Lenovo. It's a very solid machine, and quicker than any of the Dells I've ever owned.
