I am thinking of buying a 17.3inch screen laptop. However, I have been told they tend to overheat. Is this right?
Also what brands would people recommend. I've been told to go for Dell or Compaq. Does anyone have any advice.
I would welcome any advice and help.
Thanks

It's a bit of a generalisation to say they overheat, but it's true to say that a bigger screen will draw more power, so if the design is poor in terms of heat dissipation, a bigger screen will make the problem worse.
With so little information on what you value in a laptop, recommending a brand is difficult. Some are good for "budget" range, others for "business class". I've always had Dell for business use and found them to be very reliable and quite robust.0 -
Honestly never heard of this problem before. Only poor design would make a laptop overheat because of the size of the screen.
I think Dell are good. Mines been reliable and had no problems.
Have a look at this: http://reviews.cnet.com/best-desktop-replacements/
Expensive but worth a look0 -
whether will overhead it depends on the one,not the screen size.
I recommend you to buy a accer one or HP,the heat is good in case of the overheat.0 -
Have had a 17" Toshiba Satellite for over three years now and never had a problem with it.0

I have a Compaq that overheats a lot of the time, for that reason I would not recommend it.Not Rachmaninov
But Nyman

It works fine. You can get a Laptop Cooling Pad, if you get overheated.0

But why should that be necessary?
I would not expect something to overheat in normal use.0 -
it would have to be really bad design for them to overheat because of the screen, mainly because the actualy system is bigger therefore giving more area for fans and ventsDrop a brand challenge
on a £100 shop you might on average get 70 items save
10p per product = £7 a week ~ £28 a month
20p per product = £14 a week ~ £56 a month
30p per product = £21 a week ~ £84 a month (or in other words one weeks shoping at the new price)0 -
I agree with gonzo127, the extra power the screen uses is more than compensated for by the extra space and ventilation.
As for brands, the coolest (literally cool, not trendy!) laptop I have had is my dell xps 17". I think it is still the current revision but I'm not going to check as I will just upset myself!
I would personally steer clear of acer as of the three I've known they've all ended up with very wobbly screens, which will only be exacerbated by a large 17" screen.0
