Some basic questions about next mobile purchase from luddite

Firstly I know *very* little about recent mobile phone technology so am looking for advice about a purchase preferably with specific models suggested

Here are my requirements :

1) it needs to be 3G as I use the three network

2) I need to be able to tether it to my laptop so I can use the mobile as a modem & so use mobile broadband (instead of via a dongle)

3) I need to be able to download files via wifi - as I use a download manage called jdownloader on my PC/laptop then if its possible I would like the mobile to be able to run the same download manager or failing that some other decent download manager available for whatever operating system the phone uses

4) Im looking to pay as little as possible for just the above functionality - I do not need any other bells & whistles

5) I want to buy a phone & not a phone + contract

Any suggestions ? (while I go away I try to google some ideas myself)

1) I'm not sure what you mean - 3G isn't something specific to 3.

2) You'll want a large data allowance for that.

3) All smartphones can download files via wifi. But if you already have an internet connection for the phone to connect to via wifi, why do you want the phone to be able to download things via wifi? And if you don't have another internet connection, then the phone will be downloading via 3G - wifi is a way of connecting to a network, not directly to the internet.

I've no idea about download managers.

You don't want an iPhone.

1) I will be putting a three SIM in the phone hence I need a 3G phone & not a more basic 2G one

2) the data allowance is dependant on the SIM not the phone - Im after just a phone not a phone + SIM deal

3) I do know the difference between connecting via wifi & directly via my SIM / mobile broadband

I want to be able to access free wifi at wifi hotspots such as provided at tesco, O2, starbucks etc... - as this means I can get extra data allowance for free

Hello,

If you're just looking for a phone with no contract and dont want to pay a lot. Have a look on eBay. Although be careful and read everything in the listing!

Im guessing that I need a smartphone as I want to be able to install a download manager app ?
