Blinds for the front of my house

Hi All,

I am new to posting although have loved this site for ages, some good tips and lots of help.

I want to put either Ventian Blinds or Roller Blinds on my front windows. I live on a main raod so we have the goldfish bowl effect going on at present. We hate nets.

My questions is, what is more practicle Ventian or roller?

I know ventian are harder to clean, and a lot more exspensive for the nice wooden ones but that is about it. Any thoughts?

Also are Ventians difficult to put up, I know we could use a company but at £100 per Ventian to fit, I think not.

Thanks

Well, we have the same sort of frontage to our house, neighbours to the right as you lookout of the window are elevated and could see right in to our lounge. We had vertical blinds put up so we could close them , tilt them sideways, especially as the sun at some parts of the day were in one side window and then the other. My better half washes them by putting them in a pillow case and into the washing machine. I remember the company was nationwide and not that expensive. Worth a look into
:confused:I have nothing better to do!!!!

I'd recommend Vertical, as you can adjust them whichever way to stop prying eyes and still keep the light in, and the main reason, you can clean them, either like Startrekker described or like I used to stick them in the bath with washing powder and hot water, give them a light scrub if they need it. but if it's roller or venetian you're after, roller ones are easier to clean, venetian are easy to put up if you're good with a drill and screwdriver, can be bought cheap (ish) at Argos who do bog standard sizes.

When I first moved to my house I bought some roller blinds to screen my windows, but last year changed them for wooden venetian blinds. I fitted them myself, as I had put some up in my last property & they are quite easy to do if you are fixing them to a wooden baton or frame.
The bigger the bargain, the better I feel.

I should mention that there's only one of me, don't confuse me with others of the same name.
  • We have wooden ones from ikea. Only trouble with them is the trim strip that goes on top won't stay on.
Nothing to see here, move along.
  • We had a similar problem and opted for white wooden blinds - cheapies from Ikea!

I have a bay window with 5 separate windows as part of it and I had venetians fitted by a blind company. They are superb. Better than a roller blind in this case because there are so many things you can do with them - down and shut, down and slightly open so people can't see in, down but open, halfway up but open or shut or part shut or fully up. When shut you can still see my patterned glass at the top whereas with roller blinds when fully rolled up they would be quite wide so the pattern would be covered. I had a blind company fit them because being a bay I wanted them done properly (I would make a right mess of the most simple of windows) and they have been fantastic. Just get a light feather duster and give a wipe over when shut and there you are!

There are three types of people in the world, those who can add up and those who can't.

Which company did you get yours done from?
  • Hi all,

Thanks for all your help it has been great to get such good feedback. I got my 3rd quote from a blind company this morning. Happy days they will supply and fit the whole front of house in real wood ventitian with pelmets for £1000 that includes 2 bay windows, 5 windows in total and only 1 is small. I can not believe it. Just shows it pays to shop around.
