Happy to go to £20/month on a contract.
Not worried about loads of free minutes.
Unlimited Text.
Not too sure about data, proabably 500mb.
Orange preferred network as I am confident about coverage.

Current Favourites:
iPhone 3gs with 3 or Tesco
HTC Desire S with Orange
HTC Rhyme
Samsung Galaxy Y/W/Ace - really not sure of the difference between these three????

How the hell do I make a choice??

  • I would be inclined to go for Tesco on a capped tariff. That way you won't end up with a massive bill if he goes over on his calls or data. Also, if he runs out of minutes, texts or data he can top up as though it was a PAYG

For £20 a month they do a deal with the iphone 3gs for 250 minutes, 5000 texts and 1gb of data. I know the texts aren't unlimited but I think he would be hard pushed to use up 5000 with out developing some kind of repetitive strain injury.

Most 'unlimited' plans will have a fair usage policy of some sort...usually around 3000 texts. So sounds like a good deal to me!

That was the deal I was thinking of.

The only problem is whether it is still "cool" to have only a 3gs iPhone - will he get grief off his lovely mates for having an old phone?????

How well do you know his mates. Are they the sort who will genuinely give him grief?

Personally I would be more than happy with a 3gs but I am in my 20's and getting the latest tech is soooo much further down my priorities than it was as a teenager.

    EDIT

I've just another look at the tesco website and the iphone 3gs is showing up as out of stock on that deal.

I don't know much about the handset but the the Samsung S5830 Galaxy Ace is showing up on almost the same deal (but with 500mb) at only £15 per month.

    Thanks everyone

serious_saver: I saw the Samsung S5830 Galaxy Ace deal on Tesco and thought it looked good - just confused between all the different versions of this phone - galaxy w/y/Ace? A bit more research needed. I spoke to Tesco about th iPhone 3gs and they are expecting new stock by next week
daymo : I saw the xperia play in Phones4u on Saturday and I thought it looked good, they also offered me £60 cash back + £25 trade-in for any old working phone, but my son thinks it's a "bit babyish"!!
chrispafc: I saw the Sony Ericsson Xperia Ray phone in the Orange shop today and I really liked it, whether my son will think it's cool though, who knows!! PS - up the Green Army, always had a soft spot for Argyle (assuming that's what the pafc bit is in your username)
  • The SE Xperia Ray is a small phone and it takes time to develop the precision to text without making errors! Alternatively, turn it on its side and a full QWERTY appears.

If you are looking at the Samsung Galaxy Ace - then you may as well save some money and go for a T-Mobile Vivacity or Orange San Francisco 2. Both phones cost only £99 and offer similar features to the Ace but the Vivacity has a front facing camera.

The Green Army will march right back up League Two in 2012. Carl Fletcher will teach those little runts some discipline..and perhaps how to pass a ball without panicking.

Chris, could be worse, you could be a Pompey fan, you might pass them on their way down after their latest administration!!
  • Hello,

Ever thought about buying a phone without a contract and then going on a GiffGaff sim? for £10 a month you get 250 mins, unlimited texts and unlimited internet. Runs on the O2 network too so there's good coverage. No contract either so you can leave whenever you want and top up whenever you want.

    It's what I'm currently doing :)
