Windows 98 install ARGHHHHHH

Options
I don't think Windows 98 likes my computer.

Insufficient memory cannot continue with the install (or words to that effect)

I have 4 flaming GB of memory.

I give up!

Whole night of trying to install it, first on a USB drive, didn't finish the install and hung at the final hurdle.

Then on a 300 GB hard drive, couldn't boot from it after a 1 hour formatting session.

Then on another hard drive which was only 150 GB which took an hour to format as well.
In case you are wondering I had to use DOS to format the drives as Windows 7 wanted to format them as NFTS

My computer must be too modern for it.

because the OP needed 98 or 95 to run a specific piece of software, and they used FAT32 :)

I always thought that Windows ME was just an advanced version of Windows 98.

How about installing Windows 98 and the software into a virtual machine, say with VirtualBox?
  • Do you have a pukka win 98 CD? Use the win98 fdisk utility on there and create a partition of no larger than 127 GB. Then format the partition Fat32, then try the install again.

    ah you got there first..

my suggestion would be the same, partition what you need, you can deal with the rest of the the memory later

Seems to be a block with that suggestion http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showpost.php?p=48918695&postcount=11

OP has 4GB of memory , 300gb disk so create a Virtual machine with 768Mb of memory , and a Virtual disk of 20Gb , install and end of problems.
