  • How about installing Windows 98 and the software into a virtual machine, say with VirtualBox?

I did try VirtualBox but on trying to install Windows 98 it grinds to a halt with the following error message

Standard Mode: Fault outside of MS-DOS Extender.

I posted in your other post on how to fix this error

in short check the VirtualBox settings for your 98 virtual machine and drop ram to 32MB and uncheck "Enable VT-x/AMD-V" and "Enable PAE/NX"

with those unchecked the install will run fine! ^_^

    Downgrading to Windows 98?

I'll swap you. My PC at work is a '98 machine.
  • It's because you have too much memory and windows uses up large amounts of your address space on the cache because it tries to reserve the amount of cache based on the amount of memory. It's a fault with Win 98 because they never envisaged anyone using such large amounts of memory.

Getting a good memory manager to handle large amounts of memory might help as well.

I had a similar problem many years ago when I upgraded to 1GB of memory.
