Blue screen of doom

Options
My laptop has twice this evening come up with a blue screen. Before I had time to read the text, it restarted itself, and then told me it had recovered from a serious error, and an error log had been created.

I don't know much about computers but would be v. sad if my laptop died! Can anyone help me (please!)?

backup and create recovery discs in case it does.

  • Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) can be for a number of reasons. But the most common reason for a BSOD is dodgy drivers or hardware conflicts.

Have you recently installed any software, drivers or hardware?

Nope, have made no changes at all recently. What else could it be? I'll make sure everything is backed up, thanks.

Right, it just happened AGAIN. This time I'd turned off the automatic restart, so got a longer look at the BSOD. It said:

    ***STOP: 0x0000008E (0xC0000005, 0xBF955332, 0xEE27BC00, 0x00000000)
    *** win32k.sys - Address BF955332 base at BF800000, DateStamp 4e661e29

Is this any use at all? Does it give any hint as to what the problem is? Thanks in advance for your help.

Thanks - I've run chkdsk, but don't know whether it made any difference. Here's the hijackthis log:

It of course be a new update from Microsoft, via windows update. Press F8 (constantly) as soon as you reboot and select Advanced Startup and select system restore (Not recovery etc just system restore) then select a date before last Wednesday 23/11 and see what happens there have been a number of updates that have failed , usually around windows defender .

Edited: Whoops, you are back up, I am having a bad day check with Windows Update and see what has been just installed

Hope not :( Is there any way to check, or do I just wait to see if it dies?

Ahh, okay, will do. Do I need to do anything after rebooting? I didn't know what that software was, but google suggested it was something to do with remote access, which I do use to connect to my work's network, so I assume that's what it is.
