    So I finally did the downstairs yesterday.

    On the east side of the house the whole lot was loose and could be blasted off back to the render with a pressure washer. The rest I painted on the alkali paintstripper with a wallpaper brush, waited afew hours then washed it all off with the pressure washer.

    I have come to the conclusion it was an oil based paint or similar as the paintstripper did not dissolve the emulsion underneath.

    Ready for repainting:-

    Thanks, I thought I'd give everyone an update just in case it helps anyone with something similar (and prove I don't just ask idle questions ;))
