As of an hour ago running Zorin 5.2 in a dual boot with Ubuntu 11.10
As i said.. only been trying out Linux the last few weeks..
it's a weird and wonderful (if not scary) world..
however to be honest.. i'am finding it quite hard at the moment..
but i'am determined to crack it.
Like you I am still learning. As I repair computers I have a few spare machines around and loads of IDE hard drives so I play with these alternative systems to expand my knowledge base. I find it difficult at the moment to get my head round the 'language' used but have begun to change a few things in the Command box as an experiment. My next experiment will be to give a computer with Linux or Ubuntu to an elderly person who has never used a computer before to see how they fare.0 -

Maybe I could have been more politically correctand I am old too!!
Two weeks ago I sold a basic tower system to an 82 year old lady who had never used or seen a computer before in her life. She only wanted one because her older sister had spent £800:eek: on a laptop so she felt left out. Within 24 hours, my lady was sending and receiving emails and has made remarkable progress. My thinking was that for most basic uses, people don't need to spend money on a Windows install and eg Linux / Ububtu would be perfectly okay. I have a collection of tower computers that I want to sell and when somebody is interested I ask them if they want Linux installed and they are too scared or too wary to try it. Therefore I wish I had provided my 82 year old lady with a Linux system to see how she got on and I am confident that she would have been okay. I could then relate this to anybody who was used to Windows and that there is life after Microsoft:D0 -
Hurrahh..hurrah..the latest Ubuntu.11.10 core download has cured my wireless woes...Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..0

Several of us are, no, I'm not stalking you.
But if someone has never used a computer, and just wants to surf, then what does it matter re the underlying OS. They won't know any different.
Just for the record, I dual boot Win7 64bit with Ubuntu, have a thin client running Slitaz acting as a web server for my home grown site. Also a 'retired' XP machine as a spare, next to me is a Tiny AMD K-6 Win 98se, which someone has just this evening, 'donated' to me for bits (?), it's just been fired up for the first time in 3 years.
Also several VMs (Linux and BSD) on the Win7 system and a FreeNAS backup server thingy.
Not bad for 6 years tinkering, especially for someone who was approaching 50 at the time they were given their first PC, and had never used one before.
ps forgot to add, anyone with experience of Zevon OS?Move along, nothing to see.0 -

I gave my father his first computer at the age of 75. A netbook running a minimalist Linux based on Ubuntu.
You know what? He couldn't give a monkeys what it ran. All he needed to know was button X brings up Firefox; button Y brings up the email.
Then he gets an iPad, which is great, but he still uses the netbook.
Things like Google mail and docs make the Operating System less important now.0 -

I could well see that something like linux Ubuntu would be very much more useful and intuitive for PC virgins/older people. It can do simple stuff and complex stuff all without a fuss...
For example, only last night i was editing a 10Gb video which i had digitised with the same machine and also websurfing and chatting at the same time. Try doing that on a windows pc and it would slow like treacle with the HD whirring and gurring like an old washing machine..
