Mint 12 is out - goodbye Ubuntu?

Mint 12 has finally been released - has anyone here made the jump from Ubuntu yet, and if so was the experience a good one?
The Release Candidate has been running here on an old laptop for a week or so and - leaving aside some installation problems (the laptop's hardware can't provide hardware acceleration, but the RC LiveCD did not want to fallback to a simpler graphics mode) it's running well and looking good.
If the feedback is good it will be a clean Mint 12 install on my two main PCs, and a resounding "thanks but no thanks" to Unity...
(Incidentally, it seems from the fact that Mint now comes in a flavour - LMDE - that derives directly from Debian that they might be heading that way for all of their releases. Anyone know if that is true?)

i only use mint at home
ive always sung its praises0 -
Havent looked at MINT but have run Ubuntu for some years with no issues save for the perennial and widespread issues with wireless on laptops.
Now i realise its all but free but when oh when are canonical going to address the ongoing issues with wireless in ubuntu?
I previously had 10.04 LTS running fine after battling with the wireless then they unleashed the latest upgrade and my wireless hasnt worked since. I have now had to removed the card from my lappy and plugged in a cheap USB dongle which works great. So it has to be down to the way Ubuntu addresses the pic cards.
Does MINT have wireless issues as well?Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..0 -

Funnily enough I've never had problems with Ubuntu and wireless. Both my wifi and my 3 mobile broadband dongle have worked straight out of the box.
I think the real issue comes from what chipsets are supported by the kernel. If you are lucky (or research well before buying) then it's completely plain sailing. If not, you're stuck with messing about with NDISwrapper and all that - though most who try that seem to have success.
Does Mint have the same issues? I'd guess it does, as it uses exactly the same kernel as Ubuntu.
But back to the question: anyone tried Lisa in anger yet???0 -
Ha ha , wireless N140 (samsung) went to 3.0.0-13-generic from 3.0.0-12-generic guess what I did it whilst using the pub wifi , no wifi (OK it is realtek 8192 sack of s..t) . Still how can I complain , I bought a USB 3.0 external HD wow how fast is that , sadly not at all on my lappy under debian based linuces (linuxes??). Funnily on Mandriva kernel version 3.0..... it works out of the box. Pah all lin..'s are not created equal, when they work with everything I have or will want then fine until then i will resort to the tried and tested MacWinUx.0.0.0.1** which as far as my testing has proved (and ok it was I wot rote it) bits of it need the rough edges rounding.

Errr... Thanks dcm. Apology accepted.
So, nobody tried Lisa yet? Looks like I'll just have to try it and keep my fingers crossed.0 -
Yes, installed it last night and tried it today. Seems okay but as yet undecided whether it's better than Ubuntu. I'm still in my infancy when it comes to non-Microsoft operating systems but finding them lots of fun as well as a good learning experience. Mint 12 connected via a wired connection immediately. Haven't tried a wireless dongle yet but anticipate that it will work as it has always done so on the last two versions of Ubuntu and Linux.0

I'd never heard of it, and the Zorin website doesn't tell you much about why it was developed - although the fact that you have to pay for the more advanced version suggests a commercial objective.
Versions of Linux that look like Windows have been around for at least 10 years - starting with Lindows, I think. They never seem to persist, and it seems they are based on a flawed premise: that it is a good idea to make Linux ~look~ like Windows.
In reality, all of the underlying components behave in a slightly different way than Windows, and IMO it's better to just accept that. I tried Linspire for a short while and it annoyed me repeatedly because it could not hide the differences, and I was constantly having to remember that I was ~not~ using Windows.0 -
I've been running Mint 12 in a VM for a while now and it's proved fine.
I also have ubuntu on some other machines, and I'm a long time user of Mepis.
Mepis was also ubuntu based some years ago, but they moved to debian base with rolling upgrades. The same is true with Crunchbang which I also run. The move to a debian base shouldn't worry anyone.0 -
As of an hour ago running Zorin 5.2 in a dual boot with Ubuntu 11.10
As i said.. only been trying out Linux the last few weeks..
it's a weird and wonderful (if not scary) world..
however to be honest.. i'am finding it quite hard at the moment..
but i'am determined to crack it.0
