Orange increase price of my plan w/no notice/explanation - grounds for cancelling?

Hi guys,

After a long time of dissatisfaction with Orange's prices and services, I concluded "oh well, my fault for going with them, nothing I can do" and have longingly awaited the date I can cancel my contract.. in about a years time.

I've attempted to adjust my plan to better suit my usage, and still don't understand why my bill is consistently over £10 above my monthly service charge. Again, I gave up on trying to figure how to sort this out or leave Orange.

However, I did do my research on this forum and found a few instances of potential opportunity to cancel contracts based on the provider changing their terms and conditions or their price.

Orange have just today sent me a simple text informing me that the price for my plan is to be increased - they don't say what for, or how much, but can anyone with a bit of knowledge tell me - does this potentially provide me with grounds for cancelling my contract?

There's always potential, but unless the increase is substantial (10% or more) then you'll be out of luck. The price you pay is called a tariff, it has no relation to your commitment which is the contract. If the increase is more than this percentage, firms often agree to a waiver or a discount, but it is not a 'right' you can exercise.

Since we have so many other threads on this, including an 'official' MSE one it might be better to place your question on one of those.

Hi - thanks for the tip soolin, apologies but I'm unsure where abouts on this forum you're referring to, could you point me in the right direction w/a URL or something, so I can redirect this post to it's proper place as you've suggested?
  • your story is exactly the same as mine in every respect. also receieved the text saying 5% increase and a link to their website

    orange.co.uk/planupdate/

where it bascially says tough luck!
  • I also have received a text today telling me my plan is increasing 4.34%, despite having many issues with Orange - failing sim cards, loss of signal for no apparent reason i have no option but to keep the contracts running (3 of them) until they have run their course - unless anyone can tell me otherwise?

Nope - you've got it in one. There is no 100% coverage promised, SIM cards can (and do fail) and will be replaced at no cost to you. Reasons for signal loss can be wide and varied, but the loss of a few sites does not mean the entire network is down, and is only this (on a regional scale) that will trigger a rebate, not a release from a minimum term contract.

Which means, contracts = bad, PAYG or 30-day terms = good. This way, the customer stays in control.

Ok. so to confirm, this doesn't provide any grounds whatsoever for me to try to cancel the contract. Does anyone have any experience of arranging a more affordable tarriff as a result of happenings like this? My issue is, really, that i truly cannot actually pay orange any more, if they are to keep my price plan as it is.
