Can anyone give me advice on parking. A little time ago I posted about the vandalism to my car. Anyway the police advised parking my car on the other set of parking bays outside my house ( I am a corner house ). I have been doing this for two months now. When I came out to my car this a.m there was a note on the windscreen saying,

could you park your car in a single space and not two spaces,
regards,
your neighbour.

When I park I leave approx 2 foot between me and the car behind, there is no one in front of me and room for another three cars, am I leaving too much space between me and the car behind ? Also would people start parking closer to the car behind as note requested, I am a little peeved that said neighbour did not just come and speak to me. Any thoughts appreciated.

Just to add I was once blocked in by a car parked on double yellows when I was the front car in the bay and had to get a taxi to work as I had no room to get out, I thought I was being considerate to the car behind me when I am parking, smile.gif

Passive agrtessive rubbish really. Park but leave a sensible gap tot hw white line is where I would go with it. As long as you are confident you are parkign properly then that should be ok.

Is the gap the same as other cars are leaving?

It's always hard to understand things from one side of the story but there must be some reason you are being singled out. Is there another car that is normally in those spaces but was somewhere else recently due to a lack of space? Could be them that's done it.

Your only other alternative will be to chap some doors and politely ask if you could help. I suspect no-one will have written that note though.....

I'm not sure if I understand - are there actually marked parking bays? If so, keep within them regardless of what the other cars are doing.

If there are marked bays then just park within them, if no parked bays then I guess i'd just leave less of a gap to the car behind. I usually leave enough space to comfortably walk round the back of the car and open the boot - that'll be plenty of room for someone else to get in/out of the space behind.

If someone blocks you in again (and i mean actually blocks you in, not makes it a bit difficult to get out) gently drive into the offending car - you'll be pleasantly surprised how easy it is to move and how little damage there is (ok don't do this unless you have to, but it is an option)

yes we have bays in white lines put there by council as we are residents parking, you can fit five - six cars in the bay(dependent on size), when i park there is 2 behind me, me a gap and one more car in front, this is why the note confused me so much, anyway i think until someone comes around to explain the problem and on looking at cars in all the bays around where i live i am leaving no more space than other parked cars i shall park as i am.
    thank you for your help.

Suppose you might find that all the cars had the same note and there's one disgruntled neighbour who always comes home last and can't get parked because everyone else has left a generous gap. Probably has to park an extra couple of minutes from the house and this really gets to him/her at 10pm or whatever

now there is the ridiculous thing i leave for work at six in the morning and there is still a place empty between me and the picasso all night as two houses are unoccupied at the moment, this is another reason why i was so miffed, :(

Sometimes you can park perfectly well, but when other cars move you end up looking like the bad guy.
I had the same thing last year, I parked up behind a large car, then later the car had gone and had been replaced by a small car, then a transit van had parked behind me leaving a gap too small for most cars, It looked like i'd parked in the middle of two spots and I got some snotty remark from a woman who'd squeezed in behind me with less than a few inches to spare.... I had to shout her down because she was a right gobby mare, but she shut up when I pointed out i'd been there since 7:30am!!!!

Sounds like you are doing the right thing, it is always difficult to cover every aspect, if everyone parked 2 feet from the car in front/behind it sounds good, the trouble can arise if the car in the middle is a small car and they leave, then someone turns up in a bigger car and can't fit in the, big but not big enough gap, or vice versa. I live in a semi and 2 cars can fit easily into the gap outside my and the neighbours house, it amazes me how many people feel the need to park bang in the middle of the space and effectivly take up 2 spaces.

OP: Rodenal was asking if the bays had dividing lines splitting it up into smaller bays the size one one car each

If it's just one giant bay then the answer is no.

Only thing that really winds me up with the long bays is people who park at the end, but 4 feet away from the end of the bay, not enough room for even a smart car to fit in the gap. I don't expect people to park within an inch of the line (though I do do this myself) but a foot is reasonable, surely?
