Second Life ?

  • I'd never thought of Second Life being my sort of thing but I wouldn't mind flying around in a virtual TARDIS! Anyway, if you're worried about what/who he might encounter on Second Life, encouraging him to get interested in another game is a good idea. Seconding the person who suggested buying him a copy of The Sims. Pick a version that your computer can handle: http://www.modthesims.info/wiki.php?title=Game_Help:System_Requirements/MTS2_Recommendations There's a LOT of custom content available for Sims games, and while some of it is rated 18 (anatomically correct sims and that sort of, um, thing) it's generally clearly labelled as such, and there's plenty of stuff aimed at kids as well. There's even... da dadaDAH! Some Doctor Who themed stuff: http://dragonsiremods.dragonsire.net/ Mode The Sims has a general-audience friendly forum.

Oh my, i think i love you !

Will bookmark this and have a good read later - thank you !!

    I've been Money Tipped!
    No, totally wrong.

We suffered a loss in the family recently and my son was blurting out what had happened at random times to anyone and everyone (like his brain had an overflow pipe) at the parents evening we discussed this with one of his teachers and explained that when stuff is important to him he will repeat what he wants you to know until he feels you understand. The headteacher wanted me to know that he was talking about the game a lot at school, we had already talked about his going on their with his teacher and told her if she felt he was talking about it too much to let us know so we could make sure he understood the time and a place for such things. The head just wanted us to know its getting too much.

..... and still you don't think that the teachers are showing a valid concern?

Anyway, why did you originally post? You don't really seem to want any opinions.

Can I add as well, you can get Dr Who Airfix kits, its the old Doctor but still great fun and will get him back in the real world for a bit :) My DD's venture into this has been great actually as her Dad is as engrossed in making them as she is and its really nice to see Dad and Daughter enjoy doing something together other than argue about who left all the upstairs lights on ;)

Is it normal for the Head to call? At my school, if the teacher has a concern, they pull you over at the end of the day. A call from the Head seems odd. It would suggest to me that they were very worried.

I think its fair to say that people who use second life often need to work on their first life.

Many who use second life use it for work. ;)
My first reply was witty and intellectual but I lost it so you got this one instead :D

First time its happened to us, he did say it was so we could discuss my son without him being there. The teacher wouldnt have time to come out of class i guess !

I would be mortified! There has been a lot of talk about second life (people getting obsessed, the kind of things that go on on there...) no doubt some of the teachers will have heard of it and be wondering !!!!!! your letting him see?
  • I'm probably completely off the mark here but do you think he would like to build and customise a tardis of his own - maybe you could get some really large cardboard boxes and spend a few weeks making it with him as a project. Then he could choose how to paint it.

Its time to completely close the second life account if its possible, and he will mourn it and probably hate you for a few days, but offer some more age appropriate alternatives and he'll forget pretty quickly.

I think it's sometimes up the the parent to push friendships a little bit. My eldest was very happy playing on her own but while chatting to other mums in the playground I would sometimes say "***** (daughter) would love yours to come to tea", even though in reality she'd never mentioned it. The other children were less daunting on home turf and soon they'd discover things in common. Then their mum reciprocates the invitation and proper friendships start forming. That's what I found anyway and my daughters best friends now (8 years later) include some of the girls I invited round then!!

I don't know anything about second life, but I'd also recommend Magic the Gathering or other similar games. I used to be into gaming and the clubs/shops all have kids sessions. A lot of them also have sessions especially for kids to play the cheaper versions. If you want more info just pm me. It'd give him something to do, a way of meeting other similar kids (all the ones I knew were very grown up for their ages), etc.
Unless I say otherwise 'you' means the general you not you specifically.

Why are you allowing your child at 8 to play 18 year old games any way?

Who is in charge you or the 8 year old? YOU rule your home, not an 8 year old.

I thought 8 year olds were amongst other things, out bike riding, playing in the park, lego, reading, football, judo, and such like, with online stuff being there as a reward for 1 hour a day or what ever for keeping his room tidy and helping around the house.

I would stop immediately his on line acces to the second life site, and find something online that is more suitable.

    Totally this!

I found the OP post shocking, 8 yrs old, 18 rated games :sigh:

Find him something alot more suitable to spend his free time.
