YES - many of us have said we have experience of Second Life

YES - there is a lot you should be concerned about

Your attitude here says it all.

You are totally ignoring the pitfalls of the game that experienced players are pointing out to you. If you don't want to listen to the advice others are offering you then your child faces the consequences of your arrogance.

Whats funny is that Im listening to the relevant advice but sadly very few people on this thread are reading what Im actually writing.

I KNOW there are dangers to being on-line anywhere.

I SIT with my child the entire time, if thats not possible he isnt left on the game.

This is a very small part of my childs life in terms of time spent on the game, however its taking over other areas and I'd like to teach him how to continue with something he loves doing without it causing problem to other areas.

There is no need for the name calling, I came here asking for advice not smug lectures about what a bad mother I am !

The chat function is off so the worst that would happen i smy child would snigger at seeing her pants !

Nice attempt at shock factor though ;)

If you are not concerned by that image, for an 8 yr old to see and read the possible caption put forward, then I don't think anyone o this thread can really be of any help, you seem oblivious to the possible dangers.

To me it seems you are looking for reasons to validate allowing the use of this for a child 10 yrs younger than the target age. You want justification, not advice.

If my childs headteacher pulled me over and let me know they were concerned about a game my child was playing, i would seriously consider banning them from it. Even more so as the game is absolutely NOT suitable for an 8 year old, doesn't matter what filters or blocks you may have in place. I would also worry about what the school may do if my child continues to talk about this at school, how many times would they speak to you about it before maybe taking it further ? Social Services anyone ? I might be way off the mark about this but boy, it would worry me !! How on earth can you sit with him whilst he plays it and then ask peoples opinions about whether it's "appropriate" ?? And state that it bothers you ? For goodness sake, DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT. Stop him playing, you're the adult here, it's up to you, not your child to make this decision. He might get a bit stroppy about it for a while, so what ? As for your comment about the avatar wearing underwear, how ridiculous, you obviously really cannot see whats right under your nose. Why not sign him up for a Facebook page too whilst you're at it ? Your refusal to accept what anyone is saying to you makes me angry, be a responsible parent, take control, if your son doesn't like it, well thats just tough innit ?

If you look again, I directly answered 2 of your original questions.

Welshwoofs has explained to you that what you are doing is actually illegal.

Bur if you don't see that as relevant then there is no point in trying to help you further.
My first reply was witty and intellectual but I lost it so you got this one instead :D

If anything, the OP has become more determined to allow her son access to this game. Unfortunately some people don't like being told what to do, even when given some very good advice. I wonder what this kid will be doing on his computer in the next couple of years when he is more computer savvy, combined with boredom and far less likely to be supervised, particularly if OP is not phased by the picture above. If schools concerns are not enough to put a stop to this then I don't think there is anything anyone can say to change OPs mind. I do wish your family good luck though and I hope one of the alternatives others have mentioned will help you.

Its no worse than he would see on the beach, its only our adult minds that associate it with anything potentially untoward ! The caption wouldnt visable to him so without it the picture becomes essentially harmless !

I am hoping she is a person who doesn't like to 'lose face', but will in reality take on board some of the comments and suggestions. I'm not saying that I think admitting you may not have got the full picture is losing face, but she might see it that way.

I've never seen a woman in underwear and stockings, sucking a lollipop in a provocative manner on the beach.

Your son wouldn't know it's provocative, but what if the next avatar was topless?

It's not just a woman in bra and knickers and you know it. It's a highly depiction of a woman acting in a child-like, but highly sexualised manner.

I'll come back to the facts. You are breaching Lindon's Lab's Terms. You are actually in breach of a US law which has international reach by signing your underage child up to an 18+ service and whether you think you know better or not, sooner or later your child WILL bump into something you really wouldn't want him to see. It's not 18+ for no reason.

Honestly, I don't know why you're here asking advice. It seems to me that you simply want people to say "Oh don't worry, Second Life is great for 8yr olds!"
