Hi All,
We're planning ahead here. Hope to treat ourselves to a new 40/42 inch tlly after Xmas, and wondered whether anyone had any recommendations? Not exactly surer what to look for in a new one, but any advise received and appreciated with thanks.

Hi, this is a bit of an open ended question, you really need to at least set a maximum price and let us know what you will be feeding in to it, whether you use Sky, Virgin or just Freeview.0

Last week the gadget show reviewed TVs and the Hannspree TVs Ebuyer sell came out very well. You can't con an honest man!0

Buying after Christmas may be a wise move.
Earlier this month I bought a new LG 42" 3D LED television from Amazon for £589.
It's now showing at nearly £100 more.
I wonder if the prices have gone up temporarily to catch those who must have a new telly for Christmas.0 -

More likely to allow them to reduce in the 'sales' :mad:0 -

You may be right.
I've rarely seen desirable goods genuinely reduced in sales, so I tend to buy when it suits me.0 -

That's because there are very few genuine "sales", it's all about giving the consumer "a reason to buy". Just wish everyone would wake up to this it's been going on for years.Helping the country to sleep better....ZZZzzzzzzz0 -
Would be useful if you named your budget.... without it I will assume there is none and so recommend:
Panasonic TX-P42VT30 - plasma
Samsung UE-40D8000 - LED
Panasonic is the best if the room isnt too bright and you wont have problems with screen reflections.
Samsung is best in a bright room, one with a high risk of reflections or if you spend hours a day gaming on it0 -
I was thinking of the £400 to £600 or thereabouts. I don't have cable or SKY, no idea whetherr I would get them to be honest. Basically use freeview and find that enough, and play online games Xbox360.0

If you are sticking with Freeview, worth getting a TV with a high definition tuner - Freeview HD.
There's only a handful of high definition channels at present, but the quality is far superior.
Some of the Panasonics allow you to record programmes to a USB hard drive or stick, which you may find useful.
Not all televisions with a USB socket allow this.
On some the USB only reads content from the storage device.
Something like this would do the job:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Panasonic-TX-L42E30B-42-inch-Internet-Ready-Freeview/dp/B004P1HVXO/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1322495653&sr=8-10 -
Try and get one with a Freeview HD tuner unless you don't mind paying extra for a Freeview HD PVR. That being said, the SD Freeview TV's should be reduced because the UK is moving towards analogue switch off. My local transmitter had analogue switch off in September but I don't have a Freeview HD tuner yet.
I would suggest that you see the TV before purchasing rather than buying online site unseen.
Check out this forum and search for models that interest you so you can see what other owners think of their TV's before you purchase. Many have faults, some of which are never corrected by updates. There might be something which you really couldn't put up with.0
