Kaspersky isn't that good an AV. I stopped using it a very long time ago. Avira is better. Qihoo is the best for new Malware detection but even then only 67.6% were caught, followed by G DATA and then Avira. That is why a Sandbox provides the best protection and avoids having windows infected by Malware. If an attack happens, simply delete the sandbox and nothing affects windows OS files.

Go for Kaspersky as it's free and if it suits your machine (the 2012 version is reckoned to be much lighter on resources than previous versions). Otherwise try Avast Free or even Panda Cloud Free which are pretty light on resources.
However, whichever one you go for bear in mind that none of the signature based anti-virus programme is 100 % safe and most are pretty cr*p at recognising zero day threats such as rootkits, keyloggers and phone-home type malware whose sole aim is get hold of your cash.
However if you run all your browsing activities in Sandboxie, whichever browser you choose it doesn't matter what junk is downloaded onto your system - virus's, spyware, malicious URLs - as soon as you close your browser it's gone. And it's far better to prevent an attack than try to clean it up afterwards. Once your machine has been hit by a severe infection you can never know if it is clean, whatever your computer scan says, and very often the only way to be sure is by a complete re-install.
Theoretically you can run Sandboxie without any other form of anti virus protection but it always best to run it in conjunction with something like Kaspersky as an extra layer of protection against possible "operator error".
For me I can't recommend Sandboxie highly enough. It's saved me a number of times and once you can get your head round the concept it really is quite simple.
Sandboxing or any form of HIPS security certainly seems to be the way to go with computer security as with the amount of malware released each day most a/v programmes are just playing catch-up.
