Confused re new contract porting my number

Hi all, hoping that some of you lovely people can help my poor fuddled little head!
I currently have a contract with Vodafone which ends in February. I've been looking about and I quite fancy getting an iphone with Three.
I'm not sure if I'm planning this correctly though, so would appreciate any advice/input.
I know that I have to give Vodafone 30 days notice to cancel my contract. So once I give them that notice I then wait a couple of weeks? (so I'm not paying 2 contracts?) then order my new phone from Three, meanwhile I have also got my PAC code from Vodafone so once I have my phone from Three I phone them up and give them the PAC code, they transfer my number and all is rosy in the garden? And then my Vodafone contract will expire on the date that I have given them.
Does that sound about right or have I got it all wrong?!
Many thanks in advance
