Buying a phone abroad
Going to the states in a couple of months where phones are considerable cheaper than here, Can I use a phone in this country that I have bought from abroad?
My GF is also going to Hong Kong on business in April where phones are far cheaper than here. But will they work over here?
Cheers,
Pete.

The phones use different frequency bands in the USA and some other parts of the Americas (Argentina). Where we have 900 and 1800 MHz they have 850 and 1900. So if you take a dualband phone across the Atlantic you're likely to be disappointed.
If you get a triband phone over there it is more likely to have 850, 1800, 1900 whereas a triband here will be 900, 1800, 1900. If your new phone is quad-band you should be fine almost anywhere (not Japan).
Hong Kong should be fine0
