He could have gone down under? just a surmise but he probably would have been back on .... , perhaps there has been too little by way of Virii . I noticed that Hammy has been PPR'd.

    Thanks

Just odd when people who are on most days just up and go

I've got a couple of Western Digital elements drives (1 TB & 2TB). I've never had any problems with them
Many on here seem to avoid them like the plague though.

I was waiting for the 2TB to get down to £50 before I bought another. Guess I'll have to wait quite a bit longer now.

There was a 1.5TB model for sale at a few places for about £60 last week. They've all gone now & I doubt they'll be back at that price for a while.

Unless you really need one now, I'd wait for a few months until Thailand has recovered from those terrible floods and is able to resume normal production, might be some time until prices go down again though (my guess is 6 months at the very least, probably more) If you need one now, keep an eye out on the Xmas promotions. I've had a few WD too for some years and they've been fine so far.
Now free from the incompetence of vodafail
  • The floods in Thailand have severely impacted hard disc manufacturing
According to one report I remember reading somewhere on the web............
Toshiba had water 1m deep in their buildings are that is out of action
W.Digital have suspended all disc manufacture in Thailand
Others not immediately affected are having sub suppliers who are

It will be interesting to see whether this affects the uptake in using SSD's rather than hard discs.

Thanks all, appreciate your help. I had no idea there were issues affecting the prices of drives so it was interesting to read the replies (even the cheeky one :p;):D).

Will check out the links and decide what to do.

I've just bought one of these. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Western-Digital-Elements-Desktop-External/dp/B002E7HEVU/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1322442365&sr=8-3

I saw it for under £60 on Very but surprise surprise, it's out of stock.

Amazon also sell the 2TB one for under £100. I never noticed that one!

The same hard drive was £55 two months ago, and the 2TB was £70!

I paid £65 for my 2TB Seagate external USB hard drive back in October.

It's worth waiting a little until the prices drop :)

    The Great Declutter Challenge - £876 :)

As I couldn't wait, and because of the terrible state of things in Thailand causing external HD's to become thin on the ground, I bought this 3TB HD from Argos for £119 (was £149)... with (at the time) a free a 2GB pen drive:-

I've had a 500 GB Seagate for a couple of years now, with no problems...very easy to use, just drag and drop!

sorry the two recertified hard drives i bought from ebuyer last year,
    were 1.5 tb ..............not 1tb as i stated above,they were £ 35 each,
i have owned all in one external hard drives before, like the samsung story station for example,

however i did not get on with them, some of them power down, which is annoying,
and some of the chipsets in them are crap,so i gave them away,i gave one to the window cleaner he was pleased...........bye
