What's decent in the world of external drives these days?

Options
Looking for a 1T or maybe a 2T depending on price.

Been a while since I bought one, not sure if there are any clear winners out there or if they are all much and such?

as a side issue - natural disasters in the far east have (unusually) greatly INCREASED prices of HDDs in recent months. If you can wait a couple of months, prices have (I think) started to come down again so you will save money. Any forum members know anything further on this?
    regards
ps I've used western digital, hitachi, and seagate in the past. Can't say I've noticed any difference.

I had heard about the prices shooting up too on the hard drives, memory etc but I just bought a Seagate 3TB drive at a Best Buy Store in the USA on my holiday there 4 weeks ago for $139 less a 10% discount which they gave me for inconvenience when returning a faulty Toshiba laptop.

This is my second Seagate external drive (first one still going strong after 5 years) but I needed more storage. Also have WD Passport drive which has lasted well too.

I doubt you will be able to get that low a price back in UK but scout around online and you may get a bargain, or do you know any friends going to USA for a Christmas shopping trip or visit?

EDIT: Just checked out current price and it has risen to $219.99 on their website, maybe best to wait for a while as other posters said
  • I bought a 1 TB Iomega USB3.0 in July £78 now they are going for almost twice that, I really would wait.

1 dont buy any hdd drive at the moment as prices have on some models tripled in price. someone mentioned earlier about some disaster.
when prices do drop, which wont be any time soon, forget January as some people say, i'm personally thinking maybe august 2012 for prices to start dropping again
personally i bought a 2tb samsung drive a couple of month before prices went through the roof, dead quite, cool, and an exclousure to put it in. price came in cheaper at the time than buying a 2tb external, give you an idea of price £75, complete. £8 for the enclosure, so drive was only £68, now you'd be looking at £130 for a 2tb external. £99 for a 1tb. which would have been less than £50 at the beginning of the year.

I've just bought one of these. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Western-Digital-Elements-Desktop-External/dp/B002E7HEVU/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1322442365&sr=8-3

I saw it for under £60 on Very but surprise surprise, it's out of stock.

Amazon also sell the 2TB one for under £100. I never noticed that one!

He could have gone down under? just a surmise but he probably would have been back on .... , perhaps there has been too little by way of Virii . I noticed that Hammy has been PPR'd.
