BT Broadband - Help!?!?

Hi All,
First post. My wife and I use BT Broadband. We have sold our house and are due to move out in late Feb. Due to a previous sale falling through there will be a period of about 3-5 weeks when we will be staying with friends prior to moving to our new house. BT reminded us today that we are contracted until the end of the year. No problem with that per se, however they have told us that as we have no moving date for our new home we will be liable for that '12 month' charge and will have to set up a new 12 month contract in our new home. Effectively, we will be paying for approximately 11 months broadband at a house we have left! We asked if the service could simply be suspended until we moved into the new place and were told it couldn't be done.
Has anyone experienced this before? Should we complain and if so, who to? Ofcom?
It seems crass but they wouldn't shift on the phone today.
Any help or ideas greatly appreciated.
Thanks
