That looks fairly straightforward but time consuming. I'll keep looking on e-**y and see if someone is selling a spare cover that I could take apart. Have some time as they've not bought the chairs yet. Happy Sewing all.:j

Hi, just found this 'thread'! I have recently come back to sewing after having a busy job and no time to indulge... Just sewed some costumes for the local gang show and re-hashed a roman blind. Loved the Costume making, but found out that it is much easier to make a roman blind from scratch rather than chop down an existing one!!! We live and learn!

Look forward to joining in with my own stitching tales!

welcome Jan, yes agree about Roman Blinds but this is Old Style so we would expect a make do and mend solution!

I hope I have the right section here, and hope someone can help!

I have a couple of small sofas and armchairs that are looking very faded and tired, I want to re cover the seat and back cushions but am not sure how to measure up for fabric.

The seat cushions are box style, very square and measure 58x60cm and are 17cm deep with a zip at the back.
The back cushions are just like a regular cushion, they are made from one piece of fabric and have a zip at the bottom, they are squishy where as the seat cushions are hardish foam, the back cushions measure 64 x 65cm. I have just measured one side of each cushion so assume to work out the fabric need to double up these measurements.

Can anyone help me with working out how much fabric I will need, I am not sure if I am able to make them myself, I think I would be OK with the back cushions as they are just like a normal cushion cover just larger, I am not sure though about putting in a zip! I may be able to salvage the zips from the old ones?
I think the box ones would be more difficult as they have a 'beading' (not sure what it's called) around the top and are a very snug fit.

If I could get an idea of how much fabric I need then price that up then I could work out if I can afford to do this! I have done some basic sewing in the past and have a machine, gathering dust(!) so could do it at home, otherwise if anyone on here could give me a rough idea what someone would charge to make them that would be good too!!

Thanks in advance if you can help, if you need any other info or measurements let me know!

This is on a posting a few pages back and may help you to decide if you can do this yourself.

Please can someone help me. I would love to get a science related duvet cover for my science mad son, preferable with the periodic table on it, but I've looked and can't find anything. I thought my problems were solved when I came across a site that printed people's designs and you can buy them. They do them in all different fabrics and I was going to ask which one would be suitable for making a duvet cover out. Then I've seen on the site that because the material isn't fire retardant it isn't suitable for using as bedding. Does anyone have any suggestions. Can you make the material fire retardant and how? Or any other ideas for making a science related duvet for DS.

This is the site I saw the fabric on

Hi there Spendless, could this be because it is an American site. I looked up fabric for making duvet covers and they suggested any sort of cotton including quilter's cotton fabric and that is not fire retardant. Good luck with finding what you want. Happy Sewing all:)
Just had a thought you can get paper to print on T shirts that you put a computer generated design on. You could print out the periodic table and put it on a plain cover.

  • good morning all!

Been a wee while since i last poked my nose into the sewing annex.

Just had a bit of a frenzied shop with BHS and Debenhams for new bedding, got some amazing deals on Egyptian Cotton and I cannot wait for them to be delivered.

But of course I couldn't stop there.... ;) Had to buy a new duvet to compliment my duvet covers, but..... they had no doubles in stock - only super king size.... at the bargain price of £21

Now I have a dilema.... has anyone ever tried to resize a duvet? I just couldnt resist the bargain, but need to reshape/size/alter into a double duvet.

    Any suggestions would ge greatful.

(Already thinking, if i can pull this off, I could use the excess to make a few scatter cusions for the bed)
