Talk Talk eceeding download limit, should I change provider?

For the last couple of months I have exceeded my download limit of 40 gb. As my usage hasn't changed significantly that I'm aware of I asked for a breakdown of their figures so I can address the issue. They will not do this. I have since reasesrched and on the Talk Talk forums there are a lot of people with the same problems yet Talk Talk's attitude is quite shocking. At one point they virtually said unless enough people complained they wouldn't do anything. There are many a lot more savvy than me that have monitored their own usage but when there is a discrepancy TT doesn't believe them (or when customers have been charged whilst on holiday with everything switched off and no wifi access). It seems to me that they can say what they want and charge what they want without having to give details to show where they get there figures from, yet we have to give detailed metered readings in order to prove them wrong - and then they are deemed inaccurate. The balance is very unfair and not in the customers favor. Others far more informed than me have got nowhere so as a computer numpty I don't stand a chance.
So, I need to do what I can my end so help required please! I've downloaded the networx (does this work on my ipad?). The kids (2) have itouches, wifi phones and laptops but did have before this. My son has recently got an xbox but the limit was exceeded before this. He has watched sky go and I am aware that this uses a lot of downloads as do youtube vidoes etc which could explain the figures if only I could have a breakdown so I knew! Can I monitor their individual usage?
I did want to change provider but it seems from the download discussusion here (which was very useful thank you) that they are all much of a muchness.
Sorry if this was long and waffly. I'm trying to learn so any help and advice would be gratefully received,
Thanks,
Annie

Hello,
It would be worth looking for suppliers who don't have a cap.
Sky do a product, as do the post office.0 -
Thank you for your prompt reply! That is something else I had considered so wanted opinions as to a better alternative. I'll definately look into them but would like to establish my accurate usage also.

I seems like a lot of people are using the internet and for data hungry stuff. Most may not be a big problem by themselves, but it all adds up. A quick idea, is your internet secure (password protected)? Maybe more in connecting then you thought?
You can sign up to Talk Talks free usage meter HERE. It's pretty handy to know how much has been used. If your half way through the month but has used less then 20GB then you know you are good. If you are over then maybe cut down on downloading as much till the end of the month.
For £5 extra a month (if you can afford it, I know times is tough), you can get 80gb download/month. That what I did, although I usually hit 100GB min, I'm a huge downloader.I've had no letters yet mentioning this.
When does your contract with TT run out? It may be worth phoning them (on a free number) to see what deals they can offer or an increased download cap for the same amount. Whats the worst that can happen?
Good luck.Thought for the day: each generation of mankind tends to hug the illusion of having reached the culmination of human achievement. Yet, as we scoff at our groping ancestors, so our descendants will surely scoff at us.

Ask for your MAC code the retentions team may persuade you to stay if you are exceeding limit .They may lift this cap .
You do not have to use the MAC code .

Thank you both for your replies. I'm not heavily downloading on purpose which is why I'm trying to learn and find out for sure so I know what I'm dealing with. If it's genuine then fair enough but it seems many people are being stung totally unexpectedly and are not allowed a voice.
I am looking at other providers (recommendations please) but you're right, it is worth talking to TT to see if they'll try to keep me. Is there a time limit on the MAC code?

A MAC expires after 30 days if unused. No free lunch, and no free laptop0

The trouble is, todays devices and websites are data hungry. I would advise to make sure your wireless has a password though, there may be a crafty git who doesn't want to hit his own download limit.Thought for the day: each generation of mankind tends to hug the illusion of having reached the culmination of human achievement.
