The worst case is that you get zero and waste £10.

    Thanks for all your help.

  • I'm completely new to this site and only started getting MSE emails within the last few months... thank goodness I did!

I read the piece about reclaiming Mortgage Exit Fees and dug out some old paperwork from 2005 with Abbey National - saw I'd paid £225 and thought i've got five mins free, I'll give them a bell..... I was on the phone for just a couple of minutes to a really helpful and efficient guy - and less than a fortnight later I have a cheque for £225 in my hand!!!!! Unbelieveable!!! :j

Guaranteed I wouldnt be £225 richer if I'd not subscribed to your email!! Really can't thank you enough!!!

(ps - to add to this, when I rang Santander I couldn't find my old mortgage roll number, the mortgage had actually ended 6 years and 6 months ago- so technically I was outside the 6 year claim time AND it was in my maiden name and a previous address - fair play to Santander, none of this caused them any problem in issuing my refund!!)

THANKS AGAIN EVERYONE AT MSE! I will thoroughly recommend your emails to all my friends and family!
  • Phoned Barcalys and they wrote to me saying that I was charged £150. This is in accordance with our policy. Am I being given the brush off, if so what should I do next?

You do nothing. Your contract said £150. You paid £150. So, no difference to refund.

When I phoned they said that they couldn't tell me what the contract stated. All they said was, it is our policy to charge £150. Sounds a bit vague to me.

They probably dont need to look at your contract. They should pretty much know what they charged with mortgages on different dates. If they have been £150 for the period in question then no need to look at yours specifically.

Do you have any reason to think that the charge went up between the data of your last contract and redemption (date of last contract matters - not the first. i.e. if you bought a new deal then that contract replaces the original).

  • After reading about this in the weekly email I decided to have a go. I had paperwork still from an Alliance & Leicester mortgage that I left in 2006. I was charged £225 (the original fee was £295 but after arguing about it at the time they dropped it to £225).

I initially phoned them but was told by a very polite lady that I just needed to put it in writing and it would take approx 14 days. I sent a very basic letter off and exactly 14 days later I received a cheque for the full £225.........very happy!!

I also contacted the Chelsea Building Society about a mortgage I left in 2004 but I didn't have any account details for this one. They've written back to say they can't help as they only keep paperwork for the legal requirement of 6 years.

Still very happy though, so pleased I'm subscribed to the weekly email :j
  • I had a mortgage with GMAC back in 2001 but they went under with the sub prime lenders (or at least this arm of the general motors finance bit did) - anyone know if it is still possible to chase this?

Due to reading the MSE newsletter last month, I wrote to A & L using the suggested template about my early mortgage redemption charge from February 2007 which was £250. The have refunded me a total of £468 which includes 8% interest over 6 years! Amazed and very pleased! Thank you MSE!
