Thanks to MSE for the advice about reclaiming MEAFs! I sent the template letter to Northern Rock a few weeks ago and just had a letter offering to pay me back £250 as a final settlement of the claim. Very straightforward. regards, dv4

I called Halifax after reading this yesterday. They said I am entitled to 100 pounds and that the cheque is in the post. :T

Got some great news from the FOS this morning. As a gesture of good will, Barclays have agreed to refund all of my MEAF charges and so I am very happy !!

Many thanks to the advise and support, which I have got from this forum, to help me get this result !!

Hi, I am new to this forum but just wanted to let you know that after reading about the Mortgage Exit Administration fees on this site I wrote to the Halifax Bank and they wrote back saying that we can have £125 back. I have sent off the form and am now awaiting the cheque.
  • Read about mortgage exit fees on MSE this morning, phoned the Halifax and I will be receiving a refund of £135 in the next two weeks. It was a very quick and painless process, all done over the phone.
Great result; I'm a very happy bunny!

The system really needs to change to stop this sort of thing happening.

What effectively has happened here is the FOS have given the bank the opportunity to resolve the case without paying the £600 odd FOS fee by refunding the MEAF instead which is less than £600.

Effectively, the complaints process allows consumers to blackmail the companies into paying. It also ties up the FOS with irrelevant and try-it-on complaints when their resources are better placed dealing with genuine complaints that need dealing with.

Yes you're right, the system certainly does need to change to prevent this. The simplest way for this to be changed is for the banks to stop levying these underhand charges to an unsuspecting public.
