I made up an official-sounding letter asking for clarification of agreed cost and actual costs and refund of any difference as we'd closed two separate mortgages with Nationwide over the last five years. Received letter and cheque for £90 within 10 days, even though I no longer had one of the mortgage account numbers... (the £90 only related to one of the mortgages - turned out no extra charge had been made on the other)

Turned out to be much easier than I thought it might be! I love this site!
  • Must have been luckier than some below. One 4 minute phone call to the Halifax, a few questions about previous mortgage ( if you can have details like roll number and dates to hand it seems to make it easier). Sorted out there and then and recieved a cheque for £100 within seven days.

:A The days are long, but the years are short! Cherish every moment, you blink that moment is gone forever  :A

  • Hi
This is my first post so not sure where it will go or how to read replies. I recently redeemed a RBOS mortgage and paid £225 MEAF. I wrote to them claiming back my money quoting FSA and £35 reasonable fee but RBPS say I agreed to this in my contract (they even sent me a copy) is this worth pursuing or is that it because I knew it was £225 when I signed up?
    Thank Alan

    Hi Everyone,

I saw Martin on GMTV today & decided to go through my old paperwork to see if I had been overcharged. I used the no posted on here & spoke to the Halifax BS & within 3 mins they agreed that I had been overcharged & they are putting £35 cheque in the post :j :j :j
I know its not a lot but its made my day

    Thanks Martin your FAB!

With all respect Alan I believe a contract is a contract & if you signed up to it then you have to abide by it. I suspect if you had a contract that said RBOS should pay you £225 you would expect them to pay up.

Hi Martin, Well Done. It took a while but I recently got £126 back from the Abbey. I also claimed interest and after a lot wasted letters from them! Today I got a further £15.88, not much but its the principle. I used your template for my first letter and one further letter of my own for the interest. Thanks, you do a great job! Regards Art:T
  • Just wanted to register a resounding success. Saw the Martin Lewis item on LK Today and wrote to both the Halifax and Abbey, with whom we'd had mortgages over the past 10 years. Halifax refunded £35 "as a goodwill gesture", while the Abbey have returned £130. Result! Thank you so much - £165 for the price of a couple of postage stamps.

Has anyone had any dealings or joy with platform, i know they were a bit of a dodgy company and not the best for customer services, (think they only employed ex gestapo as customer service advisors!) i will be phoning them but not looking forward to it, i was quoted £50 on mortgage agreemant but paid £350 3 years later.
