Husband travelling abroad a lot, need cheapest mobile solution

Hi all,

I wondered whether anyone could suggest a good solution. My husband is travelling a lot overseas (mainly Middle and Far East)....and needs to receive and make calls. Swapping sims is not really an option and for business reasons we need itemised billing.
Data would be nice but not crucial.

Has anyone got any suggestions?

I have read Martin's article, but I am a little confused, so any help would be appreciated.

    There isn't one.

Depending on your network you'll either have to add on a bundle of minutes or get a bolt on type add on. However international calls are not cheap. Expect 20-40p a minute with a discount.

If he can use Skype it will keep bills down preferably on a laptop if he has to use a phone however he MUST be sure he is on free wifi not mobile Internet. Internet WILL be expensive if it's not on wifi.

Wifi can vary from included for small amounts in the EU on Vodafone to £8 a mb depending on the network and where he is.
  • Many thanks for the response. I think that is why I was confused as there didn't seem to be an obvious solution. I guess I just need to investigate the best package with calling from abroad.

    Thank you though.

Vodafone's Data Traveller charges £5/day for 25MB/day of data. I can't suggest anything useful for calls, except maybe using the data for VOIP (e.g. Skype or Viber). Beware though that some countries, e.g. the UAE, block IP connectivity to Skype's PSTN gateway for anti-competitive reasons.
