Yes: tell the Housing Benefit people the situation, and they can disregard the house that is on the market for a limited period.

Im shocked you have been offered a council house while owning another house
  • Not sure how you can be offered social housing if you own your own home still, even if overcrowded.

Given the strain on social housing I'm pretty appalled to say the least.

  • wow!! I was homeless, pregnant, with young children and the council wouldnt re-home me!! Lol, your very very lucky!! I got my HA house purely by fluke (was 135th on list for the property, no one wanted it as it needed work doing, a bit of time, AND.. its in the middle of nowhere!!) lol x Enjoy!
The feeling i got when i confirmed my place studying criminology at Exeter Uni was brilliant!!!!!

The pride my children told me they had in me was even better!!!!! # setting positive example to children is OUTSTANDING!!!! !:grouphug::grouphug::smileyhea:smileyhea:smileyhea:smileyhea:smileyhea:smileyhea:smileyhea
  • It is possible to get a Council place when you have your own, my sister and b-i-l got a Council flat as they both had medical needs. They then sold their own house.

Imagine someone holding forth on biology whose only knowledge of the subject is the Book of British Birds, and you have a rough idea of what it feels like to read Richard Dawkins on theology: Terry Eagleton

    That's interesting.

Would I be right in thinking that there isn't a shortage of council housing in their area?

Yes, there is, but my sister had Alzheimers and my b-i-l had Parkinson's, they were given a Pensioners' bungalow on medical grounds. (I said flat in my earlier post, that was wrong, it was a bungalow). Both were over 65 at the time.

I must admit I never really understood why they were not expected to sell their house and buy a bunglaow on the open market, but they weren't.

    They are both dead now.

  • If your home is medically unsuitable then of course, you can be approved on medical grounds.

But if you own your home without a medical need then you shouldnt be getting social housing.

Loads of options to save your home, including Mortgage Rescue if the LA does that. Or selling and getting private if any equity.

There must be some kind of fraud involved to get social housing prior to losing your home in the circumstances posted.

Social housing is meant to be for those in greatest need.
