  • As above, isolating the lathe from the ground should help a lot and should be quite cheap and simple. If the noise continues to be a problem enviromental health can help. Noise at any time can be considered a nusiance. Phone them for a chat.

i dont think id helping her with the costs of any sound insulation work required.

She cannot run a commercial business from her residential garage anyway-see post 8.

    as above.
you need council permission to run a business from home.
councils turn a blind eye to things like driving schools etc...
but manufacturing etc is a strict no no.

also your mortgage lender will take a very dim view of any business activity in the home without their permission.

    thanks for advice.

    feeling a bit emotional.

knocked 4 times today to try and speak then son answered so I said please dont disturb her but get her to pop around when she stops for tea.

it had been on and off since 11am today - which although is hard to deal with I know I dont have much choice during the day.

Well her husband popped around. Basically I explained that its just too late in the evenings and he basically told me tough. If I dont like it contact the council or move!!!! I said its making me ill as the pressure going through my head is horrid as it stop starts. He said tough - its making her feel better. Apparantly she works 3 days a week so goes out there about 6pm till about 11pm and then the other days she is out there all day and evening.

oh she doesnt use the hoover at night apparantly - but I dont know what time that bit would finish as he didnt feel 11pm was late!!!!!!

I have no contacted council. but do they take in to consideration that its a pressure noise + low level hum all the time rather than a big booming noise?????

Business wise - yes she is selling it but she hasnt sold much and Im sure she doesnt make anything much from it - it is a hobby but an anti social one to me.

They have actually stopped for the last hour and OMG its just so nice = I feel stressed because having your neighbour being rather horrid to you isnt very pleasant but not having that noise is so much relief.

Yes you do-as already advised, she cannot run a manufacturing business from her garage. It's not licenced as such, not does she pay business rates.
Put in a complaint to the LA and copy in your councillor.

  • I think you should contact the council on Monday morning. You have given them the opportunity to discuss it and they have not taken you seriously. It is noise pollution if nothing else.

We had a neighbour who started sawing firewood in his garden, first for his own use, then (when he acquired a bit of woodland), as a business. He was equally reluctant to restrict the bandsaw noise (all day Sat & Sunday, evenings until 11pm in summer), so we and the other neighbours contacted the council and they stopped him. He was obliged to build a hut on his woodland and saw the stuff there, not on residential property. He was pretty stroppy about it and fell out with everyone in the street, but by that point we didn't care! His attitude was, this is my business, I have a right to make a living. But that right is not absolute.
  • I believe any time after 8pm is too late let alone 11.15pm. That is just plain rude. When I used to work on my car I would start after 9am and would stop making noise after 6pm, and our neighbours house isn't that close.

I would ask her politely. She may not even realise (although she should at 11.15pm) or may want to add some sound proofing.

Remember to always be polite otherwise you could fall out with your neighbours which isn't good.

The OP has tried the polite approach and been told to sling her hook. So now the time has come to up the ante and make a formal complaint.

Personally I'd say anything after 7.30pm is taking the biscuit. You've made an amicable approach and been kicked in the teeth. Time to step it up a notch, but I wouldn't go to the council just yet but warn them that unless it's drastically cut back then you are left with no choice. Perhaps then they will get a reality check and come to their senses.
