neighbour noise question -working in garage

my neighbour took up a new project earlier this year which is woodturning making bowls - she has set up her garage to be a workshop and is now selling her wares on the internet.

She does a great job -- BUT
its the noise and the pressure on my head. Their garage is 1 metre away from my house in one area and about 1inch away corner to corner. The way our house is positioned means that all our rooms can feel it --- its not LOUD but it can be felt and the hum is heard over our tv.

She does this during the day and understand thats her choice and cant ask her to not do it - they are not noisy neighbours - the teenage son is a pain with the football on our house wall and over our garden but other than that they arent bad neighbours at all.

What time do you think would be right to ask them to stop working with machinery in the evening??? Its 10.30 now and its still going on!!! stopping and starting makes me feel sick each time it starts and stops too so every minute or so it starts and then stops.

As it is adversely affecting you so much, I'd be minded to ask her to stop by 7pm. Allows you to relax and enjoy the evening.

Is there a way for her to set the machinery going and then to hear the impact in your house? She probably has absolutely no idea ...

I do also agree that she probably doesn't have a) planning permission, b) insurance [fire risk?], or c) mortgage approval for her activities. But you really don't want to go down the nuclear option unless you've failed to exhaust the amicable ones first.

8pm is late enough during the week. Agree she probably has no idea of the nuisance she is causing and will probably be mortified when you tell her. Put the kettle on and get the cake out. Time for a friendly chat.

    Cheers

  • It is the low constant noises that can be the worst and can eventually drive you insane. As Keystone said, go chat over a cup of tea and explain, however I would be inclined to get her to stop at 6pm, so you can get some peace over dinner.

She is seriously having a laugh, 11.15pm is far too late! Her choosing to run a business from home should not affect you. If she wishes to work extended hours, perhaps she should apply to the council and let them consult the residents.

    thats far too late.
remind her that councils dont/rarely allow any business to be run from a domestic home. certainly not noisey ones.
id be suggesting that insulating the garage walls etc would be a great idea and keep everyone happy.

    ps
her house and home insurance maybe invalid too.
    Get some gorm.
  • Agreed, that is far too late. Even occasional loud noise should stop much earlier than that, let alone an everyday business.

She really does need to do everything possible to stop causing you such problems. Have her around to your home while the machinery is on if she can do that safely, so she knows how it is affecting you. It could take some doing stopping certain noises from being transmitted through a building that is so close to yours.

Have a few words with her and ask her to come around while the machinery is going. If it's not being used for turning, it probably won't be as loud as it is while she is working. Making a recording might help if you can do that. Have something make a quiet noise at the beginning to set the recording level, so that it is barely audible. Then when the noise is happening record it using the same recording levels. Then when it's played back, listen for the quiet noise and adjust so it is difficult to hear to get the playback volume correct. If she doesn't know how it is affecting you, she cannot do anything about it and she does need to know about it.

He activities could be in breach of a number of rules and regulations.

What about the neighour on the other side of her? Do they suffer with the noise too...Would maybe help if you both maybe invited her for a cup of tea/chat at one of the houses to talk to her?
  • Sounds as if the lathe needs mounting on anti vibration feet. Have a look at rs components http://rswww.com and search on "anti vibration mounts".
In addition I would suggest noise insulation www.soundstop.co.uk
Whether it best to insulate neighbours property or your own, is open to advice.

Suggest you meet with neighbour, saying how much you like her bowls and how impressed you are with her business acumen, but you are finding the noise and vibration a problem. You would like to help her sort this problem so she can continue to work from home. Suggest the above. If you are particularly nice, you could offer to help financially or even with instalation.
