hello this is my first message :)
what is the cheapest car to run and insure? as my current car is looking none too good. only had it for 8 months and already i am considering scraping it cos its cost me an arm and a leg so far and that is still not the end of the spiraling cost. _pale_:spam:not being one to get sentimental about cars... thanks

My Citroen C1 has got to be one of the cheapest cars to run. Insurance £140 fully comp, £20 Road Fund Licence, £120 for 1296 miles in fuel, roughly 65mpg (my daily journeys are 2x 2.5 miles and 4x7.5 miles, all from cold). I have considered getting a newer diesel but the C1 has only lost about £400 in value over 14 months. The best bit is it's fun to drive and I'm 47!!

MUST avoid modern diesels if you only do short journeys, due to the particulate filter becoming clogged often. It then needs a good long blast of a drive to clean it and it will still need expensive replacement much sooner.

I agree with Skulls. I have a C1 as a runaround and there are some cracking deals on them at the moment. I pay around £120pm on a contract hire for a VTR+.
    Can I help?

You know that cannot be true, go to sell it, who in there right mind is going to get a previously owned car that is near 2 yrs old when for just £400 more they can get a brand new one with all the mfrs warranty, etc?
Chances are after it is 3yrs old, you will be lucky to fetch back 50%

Depends on your budget and how good you are at spotting a car that doesnt look right.

    Nothings 100% reliable.

So something thats ultra reliable, cheap to run etc maybe a nightmare when it does break.

Small cheap cars are not always the cheapest to insure. When the old 20 group system came out
my group 16 rover was cheaper to insure than a group 12 escort, The rover was also a lot faster
    and more comfortable.

due to my budget being a huge factor and the fact that my present car is costing me loads. i am preparing myself for the inevitable need to replace my car, far sooner than i ever imagined -WORSE CASE SCENARIO :(
so with that in mind the car would be aged 11years old( if i am lucky to get one that is...) :o

do they do c1'S back then i wonder?
    thankyou anyway

So quote your budget as the thread will seem !!!! and pointless, 11yr old car may well be at the knee point for reliability, and an 11yr old car is not going to be as economical to run as a newer car, which slides from the thread title, you may pick up a Corsa 1.2 2002 not overly expensive to run assuming the drink drive points etc are no longer valid on your license, but a car of that age and small to medium hatch is going to return 25-30mpg realistically.

So what car do you have now and why is it costing you so much money? Repairs? Fuel? Fixed costs?

Even if you had a million pounds, you would be poor, sometimes it's not the amount you have but what you do with it, cars will always cost money, an older car may require more repairs, but a newer car may be on some kind of finance, the low cost bargains will always be hard to find as others will be seeking them out, I remember when I sold my Mum's Punto, one guy test drove it, and whilst he was pondering the other guy was waiting there with his wallet in his hand, so small hatches will be difficult to get cheap and a larger car will be cheap but return a lower mpg and may cost more to run, looks like you may need to seek that higher paid job :o
