Husband being sacked after nearly ten years with company

Really hoping for some advice here, please.
My husband has been told today that he is being sacked. The company has wanted rid of him for a long time for various reasons, through no fault of his own.
He has always been hard working, never calls in sick, and is good at his job. He is due in hospital in two weeks for a major operation, and they now decide to sack him.
I only work part time - 16 hours a week - and we have two daughters of 18 and 12.
What help is available for us? We've never ever claimed for anything, and loathe the idea of starting now, but it looks like it will be a necessity .
Many thanks.

Sorry to hear about his loss, it's a tough time out there and only set to get more difficult, on what grounds have they let him go?
You may have a claim for unfair dismissal, although that is only a short term resolution, will they give him a reference?
The help that is available will not maintain a lifestyle you havae become customed to

As long as we can get by, we'll be happy - we can live without the luxuries of life :-)
They've made his life hell for ages now, but he's stuck it because of us. Now they're trying to blame him for a mistake at work which he actually had nothing to do with. He's gutted, but feeling a sense of relief at the nightmare being over.
We're already looking at downsizing, and my daughter and I are going to get as much overtime as possible at work.0 -
You said you have never claimed for anything? Do you not get child benefit and child tax credits?
He can apply for JSA but may be sanctioned for upto 26 weeks as he has been sacked.0 -
still sounds to me like unfair or constructive dismissal a quick call to ACAS may be worthwhile0

We get chb, but not tax credits. Dont think we're entitled to them. This is all very new to us.0

woodbine - he's going to go the unfair dismissal route I think, yes. He had been considering constructive dismissal for ages, but never did it because he still couldnt bring himself to actually give up the pay packet, even though they made him feel so ill.
It's the interim I'm worried about - really worried.0 -
If your income over the whole tax year will be under £40000 you'll get some tax credits. If not you should be eligible from April if you're only on one part time wage. The limit is lower next year but guess you'd be well under it if he hasn't found a job by then.
If you rent you might get housing benefit. Council tax benefit is a possibility whether you own or rent. Check the turn2us calculator:

Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.
Theres no dollar sign on piece of mind
