    Could it be rats GQ?
:) Well, we do have rats up there. Would rats climb 3 feet up a bean pole to nip out the growing tip of a bean? And leave the rest of said bean unmolested btw? They're taunting me, SDG, they're just doing it to be provocative.

Slimy deer.....yeuch, that's a lovely image to take to the office with me. Can you imagine if slugs were the size of deer and we had to hunt them with harpoons..............?:rotfl:

I laid out a new small raised bed last week and planted it up with basil and coriander seedlings. I used the blue pellets as directed and the next morning it looked like Sid Snot had spent the evening in there  Great swathes of horrible snotty slime where the little beasts had gorged themselves on pellets then just dissolved. Still there over a week later even after some torrential rain. I'm not touching it...

The results from the wool pellets are so much more pleasant, no sign of any slime on the mat they form, horrible munchers just don't seem to go there.

Aaargh! Just typed War & Peace and lost the lot for no apparent reason!

Good morning everyone, and ((hugs)) to all those in need, especially those doing battle over benefits or feeling the effect of the storms yesterday.

The sun is actually shining here, which makes a change from yesterday's monsoon conditions. I work about 30 miles from where I live (it's a nightmare journey but it's a job :() and I had to drive home through pretty deep standing water - it was washing up to the bonnet in places but I had no choice but to carry on as I needed to get to my children! I was terrified; there was no other route, and once you've committed to driving through there's really no turning back . Luckily my trusty little old car saw me through. She may be elderly but she's made of stern stuff. I was very wobbly by the time I got home though.

GQ - I would definitely blame the slugs and snails for eating the onions. The so-and-so's have eaten all except one of my leeks, despite my vigilante activities and a high population of toads in the garden. So they are obviously not put off by pungency.

Re: wartime recipes (I can't remember who was asking - sorry, my memory is in tatters :o) - I noticed our local branch of The Works had fairly cheap copies of wartime/post-war recipe books the other week. I was sorely tempted to buy them myself, but mindful of my budget I resisted. Kind of regret it now though!

Right. Time for another coffee, and the first onslaught on Mt. Washmore...!

Oh GQ - did not realise these were full grown (ish) bean plants! Is there slime right up the plants? If not it could be birds! Pecking for insects or taking nice juicy growing tips. Very off if leaves below left unmunched.

Amazon for wartime cookery books at 1p +postage. Even I like them and I hate cooking with a passion. Also Rationing Revisited blog and on FB.
I love how we're all different - would be a boring thread if we all came in to smugly agree and second each other, a wee bit of anger is a good thing if it gets you off your a$$ :) I love that saying, the one about " don't get mad, get even". Undirected anger is like punching the air - waste of energy . Use it to do something useful if at all poss.

Comfort Food...Yes, am eating lots of it! Not doing my waistline any good at all because the portions are too big. I need to exercise some portion control!:(

My favourites are my childhood foods...Banana Sandwiches! Mince and Dumplings! and HM Hamshank Broth! My mouth is salivating at the names...am seriously loosing it today!:p

I am contemplating making a Mince and Onion Suet Pudding. My Mam used to make this in a cloth, in a basin, and steaming it for hours. I don't want to do the steaming for hours bit, does anyone have a more up to date shorter method?

Byatt, I bought 10kg rice some time ago and have just finished it. It took less than a year for the 2 of us and we're not rice crazy here. It kept fine in resealable plastic containers and I'd do it again.

I'm off, knackered after a day out.
Love to all who need a hug.
