What news is that Mar?0

Hello everyone and ((hugs)) to all those in need
I have had a busy couple of days at the coalface but today is my day off (hurrah!) so time to catch up with [STRIKE]all my chores[/STRIKE] the OS board and maybe do some housework on the side
The weather can't seem to make up its mind at all today. I risked an early foray into town after dropping big DD at school and managed to avoid most of the showers. Spent £12 in Aldi mainly on fruit, veg and cheese (although one of their tobelerone-style "Swiss" bars may accidentally have fallen into my basket :rotfl:). I have to do a "proper" shop in Tesco later this evening but I am finding it a lot cheaper to get the fresh stuff in Aldi and get the dry goods/cheapy reduced stuff in from Mr T.
I'm hoping for a quiet weekend - the last two or three have been manic so it will be nice just to potter around the house a bit and just "be" for a while.
I am not surprised to learn that there is such a huge increase in slugs this year - although snails seem to be more of a problem in my garden. They have all but munched my squash and pumpkin plants - I am not sure whether they are going to make it as the leaves have been decimated  They seem to be leaving the raspberries alone (not sure why - never grown them before, so no comparison from previous years), and I put my strawbs in hanging baskets this year in the hope of defeating the little devils... so far so good. I have bought some pellets which claim to be OK for wildlife (except slugs/snails, presumably) and will be putting those round the remains of my squash plants shortly - hopefully the sad lonely remaining leaves will be enough to let the plants regenerate
Well, better go and have a tidy up - hope all is well with you all.

Oh that news, yeah it was me.
I don't know about brassic, now the banks shares have risen in light of it. That's a positive thing right? I need to get my head round it too Mar.0 -
mardatha my take on it is....banks, from the tax payers as normal and probably spent all the money on bonuses. I've stopped watching the news most of the time as I just lose my temper and end up shouting at the tv.
btw I LOVE the fressia soap. The bar of it in the bathroom is making me smile every time I use it and it's even managing to cancel out some of the smells the boys in the family produce
I've had a big mug of hot chocolate and two buttered crumpets, so I'm feeling a bit calmer now. I've spent a while pottering around the house and doing some of those jobs that you look at and think "I must remember to do that" and never get around to them. So the sock box has been sorted, the oven door scrubbed and the dishwasher taken apart and cleaned.
I've decided to half the chicken breasts, bash them a bit to flatten them and stuff them with mozerella and pepperoni before pan frying them and cooking them in tomato sauce. I basically opened the fridge and worked out what to make with what was left in it. How can I spend so much on shopping, fill the fridge to bursting and it still be empty by the end of the week?
I think it's to do with those rather large people I gave birth to and the one I married. Gone are the days of making up a few bottles and some baby rice. Now it feels like I'm trying to fill a black hole.
Thanks to you ladies I'm now craving daal and mince with dumplings. Not the most appetising of combos lol. Some Lidl stores have diced steak on special offer this weekend, so it might be worth checking your local one for those stew cravings.
Time to feed DS1 as he has emerged from his man cave and into the light.
Take care xxxx0 -

It may not be Plan B - but Plan A is undergoing some fairly significant remedial work.
In the wake of the billions poured into the economy through Quantitative Easing and Credit Easing, we now have two new schemes designed to pump yet more cash into UK plc.
It underlines just how alarmed ministers have become over the unfolding eurozone crisis.
What has added to the concern is the pace at which the crisis now appears to be unfolding.
One Treasury minister noted that on Monday morning, everyone was relatively upbeat following the emergency bailout for Spanish banks. By Monday evening, everyone had been plunged into gloom once more after the markets gave the latest deal the thumbs down.
The Treasury view is that there is now a dangerous mismatch between the pace at which the markets are moving and the arthritic response of eurozone leaders.
The big fear? That not only does a eurozone meltdown risk snuffing out any UK recovery, but it risks consigning the British economy to years in the economic doldrums.0 -

That would explain something that I read today about QE measures not working effectively because the money has been kept a hold of instead of being used for what QE is intended.
tempted to put the news on to see if I can understand better, but I get irate too0 -
The good part of the new initiative is that getting the funds is to be linked to the banks' lending performance - ie they should have to lend it instead of hanging on to it.
All we can do is keep our storecupboards stocked (if possible) and keep on OS'ing. And remember that though times do seem hard the 40s and 50s were much worse - I've got quite a collection of WW2 era cookery books, personal testimonies, etc and we really do have it a lot better than they did then.
Now, I've got £3-79 of my cash budget to last me until Monday and no need to buy anything at all - so why do I want to go and spend it :rotfl::rotfl:"Life is not about waiting for the storm to pass...it's about learning how to dance in the rain." ~ Vivian Greene0 -
Is it wrong to feel like we're in a better place than those a real part of the EU or is that just a false sense of confidence I have. Confidence is the wrong word but I can't think of any other.
I've had to turn the news off. It sends me into a panic. Off to go look into my store cupboard and do my house work. It's all I can do.0 -
SDG - Barclaycard are a nightmare, the only way to get anywhere with them is to tell them you want to make a formal complaint. They'll put you through to a UK call centre staffed with people who know what they're doing and have the power to change things with your account - the Indian call centre staff have no power and no clue.Grocery challenge September 2022: £230.04/£200
