We made Sloe Vodka last year with sloes we picked on the farm where our caravan is. Loved it! It tasted great either neat or with tonic. Went on to make Cherry Vodka with a bag of frozen cherries. Very moorish!
DH's workmate supplied us with carrier bags of Plums and Apples last year. Silly man fell for a younger woman this year! Needless to say the wife got the house and we won't be getting our windfalls. :(
Younger woman bu88ered off too!! :rotfl: Just shows there is justice in the world! :rotfl:

Been trying to read up on elderberry. It's annoying me because I have seen those so many times. I just don't know where now. It's all well and good saying to DH lets go foraging lol where? He's said he tramples near wild garlic when he's off out fishing so he's had instructions ;)

Life is exciting if you just run with things, open to learning and trying isn't it?

I use our library a lot. Whatever idea I have (shush, I know I have alot of them, it'll be something different tomorrow :p ) I reserve a book about it. The librarian, an elderly lady, has really taken to me. She say's for a young mum I have my head screwed on. That's all your fault :p;)

I've ebay'd some elderberry seeds. No doubt it'll be the wrong time of year to sow but at least i'll have a selection ready for when the time comes. Also, because I rent this house I want to keep a plant in a pot so I can take my fruits with me when I leave.

Thanks for the sloe vodka its gone to my knees already!!:rotfl:

Short bird - thank you, I think I am just peeved at paying for an imaginary pain but in actual fact maybe they will tell him to man up and move, and yes you are right in order to be paid out I have had to find someone certified :D

Thanks for the preserves suggestions - however with DS around I fear very much they would become missiles in his meltdowns,

Is there anything I can do with bacardi? I bought a bottle to make cocktails for DD party last year and it is just sitting there, the idea of turning it into some sort of gift for Christmas in small bottles is very appealing. Failing that is it worth me buying vodka now an getting some flavoured vodkas bottled up ready for Christmas?

    Evening ladies

I have crawled out of lurkdom again... I love reading everyone's stories and I am constantly amazed but overjoyed at the love and support here :A

A large ceramic cockrel, hmmm you don't often see that on a wedding list :p
fuddle you are a legend and don't let anyone tell you otherwise xx

I would like to ask your opinions if I may: I'm currently working as a volunteer in a local charity shop and there is the possibility of a paid part time position coming up, which I would love!!

What I would like to know please:

your likes and dislikes about charity shops in general
    things that make you
    things that make you :T
why you go to charity shops
why you don't go to charity shops
opinions on stock, pricing, displays, other customers, staff, opening hours etc etc

    Don't be shy :rotfl:

If the job comes up and if I'm selected for interview I hope to amaze and impress with my unofficial market research. However if I remain a volunteer I want to be amazing and impressive too as I'm passionate about the charity so all your comments/opinions/rants/suggestions would be very helpful.

    Thanks, toughies :D

Bonnie, I hate the pricing, it seems in our local shops that pricing is ridiculous, cheap supermarket T-shirts are priced higher than they were new. Things are set out higgledy piggledy too, who can be bothered sifting through 100 t-shirts to find the one in your size.

Good luck with you interview I do hope you get the role :)

All this talk of foraging makes me want to forage but I had no idea there was so much out there. Walnuts??? And rose hips, what do they look like, and rowan berries??? I need to get a book!! I'm right out in the country so should be able to find more than blackberries.

Mrs C, I think it's a settling in period when first starting...I am sure you are both a bit tense and nervous and wanting everything to go right. Have to say no-one cleans like I do, not even cleaners! So would be an epic fail if I was in charge! Generalising but men don't have the same clean gene.

Cheapskate, did I have a problem with my teeth? I can't remember now. Perhaps it was my visits to the dentist, which I hate.

Smiley, passive aggressive comes to mind, very much a teen thing...he is a teen isn't he?

Thought your daughter had tooth troubles? Probably someone else, so much to remember! :D

I do a bit of foraging - lots of blackberries, cherry plums, walnuts if I can get to them before the squirrels, cobnuts ditto, a few tiny wild strawberries. I'll have to find some apple trees this year as after a huge crop last year on my tree I have about 4 on it this year :( Best of all is field mushrooms which I slice fry and freeze or dehydrate to add to stews etc. I've also picked elderberries and made wine in the past and will be having a go at elderflower cordial this year. Oh, and rosehips later on. I really enjoy doing it and it would be a good activity to do with kids - I have fond memories of my mum and her friend taking all the kids to pick bilberries on the hills above Huddersfield.
Did you live round there, lizzy? That's near me! :)

I made bramble vodka and sloe gin last year, still have a bit left because I hid it! :rotfl: Hope to forage some raspberries this year as I've found a small source - can I turn them into vodka/gin based liqueur too? There won't be enough to make a lot of jam, so it'll have to be tiny pots of jam as pressies or alcohol for own consumption when things get really tough! :rotfl:

CS's. Ok. I love how my shop has everything grouped into like items and then all the sizes together. I know exactly where to look for a skirt in size 14. The prices are turning me away though. I want to support a charity but I can buy new primark, albeit it tat, for half the price many a time at the moment.

I go to charity shops in the hope of finding a gem. I don't know what that gem will be until I fall upon it (might be a tweed skirt or a floral cup and saucer) for a good price. I go for the excitement of the unknown and the excitement of getting something good for a bargain. With the bargain element albeit gone, the excitement wanes too, meaning the draw to go in looking diminishes.

Also, sorry to say, I skulk in and out of the shop quickly with my head down. I am still embarrassed to be seen going into charity shops but once I'm in there I am fine. HTH

I heart charity shops. Most of the time. Recently, I've been annoyed by:
Inappropriate pricing i.e over priced mass market goods.
No idea what vintage actually is.
Letting bric a brac spill over on to the floor. That's an accident waiting to happen!
Sorting by size instead of colour; I wonder why they do that?
The assistant who didn't realise A) that the chap she thought was suffering from a learning disorder was actually my boyfriend:mad: and B) hadn't twigged that I was with him when she made a few choice comments from the safety of the counter:mad:

But most of the time, they're lovely people giving time to help a cause.
