Lifting head briefly from huge pile of marking to say that dad is home!! :j After nearly 5 months in hospital, he was quite emotional I think. I would have been too.

There will need to be a period of readjustment to his new circumstances though. But there were times he thought he'd never see the house again (and so did we) so this is the best news.

    good news vjsmum.

I don't know if it is possible but I think I have become allergic to prawns. I was very sick today after having prawns in an avocado salad I made myself. Just over a week ago I had the trots after battered fried prawns that ds had cooked from scratch too. They were different types of prawns and different packers so Can not have just been a bad batch.

A few years ago I became allergic to wine and my oldest said it was probably sulpher they use on the grapes and not the wine itself. I avoid most alcohol now because even one serving makes me feel grotty next day.

VJsmum, so pleased about your dad, I am sure being home will make a huge difference to him. I remember when you first said he was ill and I imagine none of you thought it would be this long.

Wonderful, wonderful news VJ'smum May it be onward and upward for Dad.

Grandma247, re the allergies, I reckon it's possible, even if medical advice says it isn't. I used to stuff myself with fresh bread, loved it - now I get a severe stomach upset if I eat it - though not every time, which is a bit maddening.

smileyt, re the Jobcentre, that was me a few years ago, as I am an adult education tutor and used to work for the local authority. Come the 2nd/3rd week of July, classes would end and I'd have to sign on until September.
The last summer I had to do it was 2009 and it was a nightmare, I was expected to apply for permanent posts that were way outside what I do, even though I had a job to go back to. Luckily in Nov 2009 I got a post as an e-tutor for a major educational company.
I do know something of how you feel, every sympathy.

Thank you! This must be the fourth or fifth time and they seem to mess it up every time. It doesn't help that my situation is more complicated because I often have a young person with me in supported lodgings. Last time that happened, to my amazement, JSA disregarded the supported lodgings payment completely (it's nowhere near as much as a fostering allowance would be) but I expect the rules have changed now. HB, on the other hand, treat most of it (except a small amount for support) as lodger income.

Luckily I am well stocked-up on (Approved Foods!) food and have made sure I've got a couple of months of rent laid by - one year it took them nine weeks to sort it out, by which time I was almost literally down to my last pennies! Goodness only knows what people do if they are living hand-to-mouth on minimum wage. I've had years of being OS and thrifty (no car, no tv, no holidays, no drinking, no smoking, vegan, charity shopping, freegling etc etc) so I can manage for a couple of months but after that I'd be sitting on a street corner with my dogs on a bit of string!

Ooh - exciting news! I have been in touch with a welfare rights trainer who runs budgeting clubs for tenants down in London. He has agreed to e-mail me his materials so I can look at setting one up for my Housing Association's tenants (and any other interested parties for that matter). Maybe I should just refer everyone to this thread to pick the brains of its wonderful, witty and intelligent denizens!

VJ MUM-best wishes to your father on coming home-hope he continues to improve:)
Hardly watch TV myself, but if I want to watch something I plan bits of housework round the breaks-watched 'Lewis' earlier and did all washing up,dusting and felt I did a lot generally.Hate housework, but if I can 'bribe' myself like above,is a bit more bearable:DLove the results.though.
Lidl had cheap Aloe Vera plants today,so I bought several for friends and myself.Very useful to use the juice for burns, skin moisturiser, and a great under eye gel.I always apologise to the plant when I cut it:o-weird I suppose- but I only use one leaf and cut a thin piece at a time.Very economical.
I wonder if I have 'acquired' a cat-or it has acquired me?During the recent good weather, when I was sitting outside, the cat eyed me up for several days. Then he decided I was worthy of his attention and would sniff around my feet. One afternoon,I dozed off and when I woke up he had made himself a cosy bed in the knitting on my lap and had curled up asleep! I don't have any pets and am more a dog person. My neighbour told me that the cat is a stray, has been around for a couple of months, she has been unable to trace an owner, this one is obviously looking for a home, and she can't take in another cat although she would like to.I nipped to the shop and bought some packets of cat food and have been taking them down to the cat when it appears.I'm reluctant to have a cat in case I was left a 'present' I fed a cat on holiday once and it kindly left me a fresh rat every morning!! Is it cruel to give the cat food? I don't want to take him inside as I'm unsure about whether I want to keep him. He

doesn't look skinny but eats any food as if he's hungry.Any thoughts welcome:)
    Goodnight-hugs to all x
