Another new member for the ALF signing up! I hate reading new books and seeing horrendous spelling and grammatical errors, the your/you're or even people writing you instead of your is spreading....grrr!
GQ - Love this! "I'm so darned skint I stand in the International Foods aisle and get a cheap thrill.:p "0 -
I struggle with errors and also with the wrong word being used - I sat in a meeting last night where it was discussed that "people can lend money from the credit union" I pointed out that actually they can't!! People can borrow money - or the CU can lend money out. Didn't go down well! Most probably as I was there as a mere housewife/mother and they were all high ups from council!
The funeral I attended last week was a gentleman who was very proper and insisted on things being correctly done. It was therefore excruciating to sit through his funeral with a big screen which omitted his correct title!! I was surprised he didn't climb out of his coffin and correct it!!0 -
And as for should of, would of, bored of........:mad:VJsmum - Stockholm today is 14 and was sunny when I arrived this afternoon
MUCH warmer than Helsinki!
It looks like OH may have to go out to dinner for work on Thursday evening so I'll be left here on my own (I don't appear to be invited...) so if you're free, then let me know!
Lets hope the temperatures last! I would [STRIKE]of[/STRIKE];) have happily arranged to meet - I know a lovely restaurant in Djurgarden (Bla Porten) but unfortunately we have our first "activity" on Thursday evening. We are there for such a short time that we are hitting the ground running. When do you leave? Wouldn't it be funny / ironic to have an MSE meet up in Stockholm?
I am having a couple of hours off this morning to make the house fit for the mother in law, who is coming to stay for the weekend to help out OH - I know, I know I shouldn't be here then should I? Best get cracking..
Enjoy the sunshine peeps!I wanna be in the room where it happens0 -
It's bought/brought that rankles me. My only other bugbear is when people use was instead of were (was you happy with your results?) Small things but so important!
Got a mountain of washing to do once little man goes for a sleep, seems a shame to use the tumble dryer in this weather but it's a pain trying to get to the washing line when he's with me.0 -
Forgot to say, GQ love all the chat about Bees and their Latin names, had no idea there were so many types.
Is a wasp just a wasp or are there varieties? (I'm panicking now about my their's and theres and they're's... and my s'sssss':o:D)Morning all.
Byatt, the ordinary wasp is vespa vulgaris ; literally the common wasp. They named the Vespa moped after the wasp because they sound a bit like one. Speaking as an original Mod's daughter. Isn't it shocking to see photographic evidence that your Dad once had hair and a trendy wardrobe............?. There are other species of wasps, some of which are parasitic on other insects, but they are very small and you probably wouldn't notice them. If they were big enough, it would be like the mama monster out of Alien..........
All future members of the Apostrophe Liberation Front are very welcome. Just want to make it clear that I NEVER, inside my head or publicly, criticise a private citizen's spelling. Well, if they write in three-foot-tall letters on walls outside, they're fair game, but otherwise, no. However, I do get ticked off by semi-literacy in books, newspapers and the like. I feel that if you take money to write you should exercise reasonable care and competance. We wouldn't pay to see a dancer who fell over their feet constantly, would we? The book I'm reading cost £18.99 and was written by a professor and published by a university and if he didn't know better I would expect the editorial staff to pick up on it..............grrrrrr!
Well, today I am practising a bit of Domestic Engineering before w*rk in respect of running a laundry load and priming the slow cooker with two whoopsied pork chops I got yesterday. Do people think I should sear the meat in a hot pan before I put it in the s.c.? Any answers in the next hour would be appreciated.
Have a good day, everyone. GQ xEvery increased possession loads us with a new weariness.

Morning
I have not posted much lately as I am tooooooooo busy painting blinkin fences  I can only see fences, I see fences when I close my eyes, I dream fences :rotfl::rotfl:
On the plus side the tablets are keeping me upright enough to paint the blinkin fences, it is taking me ages but at least I feel like I am doing something
Five year guarantee, does what it says on the tin, one coat or two for the five year protection............yep ok why am I on the forth coat then???? could be that the fence has had it really and I am trying to hang on a few more years:rotfl:
PIC farm is slowly coming along, the cats and chooks are getting on great and three of the cats are getting on with Womble, sulky pants is still in a huff.
One of the boys is poorly and walking round like a zombie but DH and I watched him limp out of the front door and when he got to the corner of the road he started running????? I don't know if he is poorly, pretending to be poorly as he was grounded for coming in late and he is sticking by his excuse or if he is faking so he does not have to go to his Mums for the hols. It is quite normal for one or both boys to start something before they are due to go and DH feels really bad but they are ok when they get there. Oh the joys of parenting :eek:
My DS had his work experience last week and I don't think he was too impressed with finishing at FIVE  :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:
I am having a break from painting today and going to have a slow walk round a car boot.
As the English weather is so unpredictable I am making the most of what may be our only summer

Am soaked but happy. Henry Hoover wasn't picking anything up although it was working and seemed to have a bit of suck when you held your hand over the nozzle. Wiggling a straightened coat hanger down the hose didn't do anything so I ran a good blast of water from the outside tap down the hose. Success!! A great furball of blonde hair came out (DD2 sheds like nobody's business) But not until it had backsquirted water all over me, of course. Still that's £9 for a new hose saved.
I do like being able to fix things and keep them going. I almost like them better when I've been able to do that. We have a 25 year old fridge which DH has mended pretty comprehensively a couple of times (amazingly he could still get parts pretty recently even though it's a Husqvarna which hasn't been marketed for, ooh about 20 years). Thing is I measured the power consumption and it must have been really efficient for its day because I really wouldn't save that much by getting a new super dooper efficient fridge and in terms of complete lifecycle energy consumption, it's got to be better to keep this going. Besides the new ones look so flimsy by comparison.
Am I the only one who puts 3 lots of 4 pint milk bottles in the fridge after going shopping? I can't believe I'm alone. But most of the fridges I have looked at don't look as if they would bear that much weight on any of the shelves, and there isn't space in the door. You sometimes wonder if manufacturers actually think about how we really live.
Sorry, I'm ramblingIt doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!0 -
GQ - searing meat to seal it always gives you better meat as an end product in the slow cooker, even if its chunks for a stew or mince for a chilli etc. as it stops the juices from coming out in the gravy. It doesnt give a less flavoursome sauce/gracy either. Hope this helps. Cheers Lyn.0

Another one signing up to the ALF here
Homophones are my particular bugbear. DH has been known to point out errors written on 'A' boards to shops before now... We also stopped getting our local newspaper because of the amount of gramatical errors, homophone errors and general lack of proofreading throughout its pages. I happily informed them of this when they telephoned me to ask why I'd stopped receiving it
I have no problem with personal typos (am frequently guilty of them myself) but anything proffessionall
(a word frequently spelt incorrectly) should be, in my opinion, correct.

Thank you. I have duly seared. Pleased to have 2 fat pork chops reduced from £3.16 to £1.25 and that will do me two consecutive meals. I have parked them on top of quartered onions and halved carrots, added half a cup of water for luck and - wait- will chuck a couple of bay leaves in and hope for the best. Off to the salt mine for a few hours........
