We were never taught to cook at school  I have sort of scraped by teaching myself to cook since I left home as my Mum never taught me either. As you can imagine I have had a few errors over the years :rotfl::rotfl:

Pretty much everything is out of an old be ro book :p but trying to learn new things now I don't work full time and the kids are older.

I begged DH to take me to the church jumble/coffee morning as I have severe cabin fever. I was there a whole 10 mins and have had to come home and put my feet up.

In the 10 minutes I managed to buy a Sholley (trolley on wheels) for my little old man as I think his has broken £1, a touch lamp which was a donation of a £1 as they can't sell electrical items and I bought a diary for 50p

I am hoping the diary will work a little better as using a note pad for everything gets a little scrappy. I am going to do all meter readings on a Sunday so we can run a tally and any spends and totals on a sunday. Note book will be left for workings out and jobs to be done list.

Cold, wet and dark here :( so got the blankets out and resting on the sofa sifting through iplayer. Call the midwife is fab and I am quite into prisoners wives (not usually my sort of thing). I don't usually watch much box but as I am supposed to be resting it is allowed :D
    Too much info warning

Need some advice. I am a little bunged up (due to the tablets) but if I eat any fruit it is causing a build up of acid and I can't take antacid on some of the tablets I have so what else can I take. Tried plain dark choc, nice but not working unless I need to have more than two bars a day :p

I think it is good that some children do get the chance to go to grammar school if it is appropriate for them.

My DD is bright and we investigated our closest grammar school - about 10 miles away. At the open evening the head stood up and said "we are the best, we only take the best and we only produce the best. We are a highly academic, high achieving school who sends many of our girls to Oxbridge". I could barely leave the place fast enough. Totally unsuitable for my daughter - what happened to developing rounded human beings? Yet colleagues are coaching their girls to get them in there. it does obviously depend on the child - my daughter could cope with the academic side (she is an A/A* student - at a local comp) but I think developmentally it could have wrecked her.

Fast forward 5 years and DD is now looking for 6th forms as her school doesn't have one. We went back to the grammar school - she still hated it! We have, however, looked into the boys grammar in the same town which has a mixed 6th form. What a difference! Friendly, open, but most of all yes, high achieving but also focusses on other aspects. The cynical side of me says it's for UCAS points for University but still the atmosphere is totally different. Having said that, they aren't so keen on her doing Drama at A level

I went to one of the worst schools in the country - it is in the bottom 20 of the recently published lists and has probably been there since it was built in the 1970's. I left with a clutch of poor A levels, scraped into a poly and scraped through a degree. however, that Poly is now a University, i teach there and in addition have a masters with distinction. So maybe it will out in the end.
I wanna be in the room where it happens

PIC Get some diabetic sweets/chocolates that are sweetened with sorbatol (Hope that is spelt right). My DPIL are type two diabetic and both have overdone the sugar free stuff and had to sit on the toilet for a while.

They're allowed to charge an assessment fee as long as they refund it if it turns out not to be caused by you. But you can get an assessment done independently, which will probably be cheaper.

I don't have any experience of Curry's but PC world are the same group and my then-15 year old sister-in-law refused to leave the store when they refused to repair her laptop. After an hour and a half and calls going from all parties to thier HQ, the police and the local media, she got a brand new laptop :rotfl:

BYATT:- Was thinking of you when I was typing this morning! Was hoping I would not lose my post. :D You obviously have technical gremlins in your computer...probably male and b*oody minded to boot. Only cure is a cup of tea and a big cream cake/or two! Chuck the black dog a bone outside and lock the door on him quickly. Big hugs :grouphug:

Thanks Meme, you are always so kind to me. :A
I have gremlins in my phone now too, and don't know how to fix it, although have been Googling and it's a common problem without an answer though! I can only access MSE on IE now, so all very odd.

Made myself go out; needed to put cheque in the bank but also wandered into recycling shop and found a plate rack for 50p! I've been looking for one for ages, so very chuffed as they cost a fair bit new.

Was just throwing the bone out for Black Dog, and spotted my baby daffodils (can't remember the proper name) are flowering in their pot, and look gorgeous. Moved them so I can see them from my window now.

I went to 10 schools in my school lifetime (left at 16)...parents had a habit of moving around although as an adult I found out it was mostly within a radius of 3 miles, but different districts. My education was patchy to say the least. I was bright enough though as looking through my old school reports I would catch up after being in terrible schools, but I was also painfully shy, family very poor and an ugly duckling so it was tough.

I know one "moonlight flit" took place, but no idea about the rest.

They also had a habit of moving during my important exams.

Anyway, I left with CSE's grade 1 and an O level in RE. Got a job working in a university library even though I didn't have the full quals. It seems my enthusiasm for the job won over the person interviewing me.

I was made a prefect in my final year at school. I was so stunned and never expected it. For sewing, I got 16 out of 100...I was pretty bad! Can't remember much about cooking, it was ok I think. As for art, we had a mini production line one year making paper flowers for Christmas as the staff were buying them!:rotfl:

I passed my 11+ in 1951 but dad (lone parent) couldn't afford the uniform - and for me to stay on til 16 - so I went to the local Secondary Modern. We did Home Economics (Cookery lessons) and also had to do one day a week cleaning/cooking at a teachers lodgings.
Blow that - I had enough of that at home thank you very much, so often played the wag on Fridays. I was found out of course, but the teacher was quite sympathetic. Didn't mean I didn't have to go though!
I remember walking home with a friend from cookery lessons, she dropped her basket and her rice pudding went all over the pavement. Mangy dog ran over the road, sniffed it and walked away. She was upset to think even the hungry dog wouldn't eat it.
Went to Posh City yesterday. Very quiet until I got into the CSs and Primarni. Heaving! I came away empty handed again #sigh#

It's funny what triggers the memory. Just mentioning your friend, reminded me of the occasions I would balance my cooked offerings on the school bus as often didn't have a tin to take them home in. I think we must have had a choice to give up cooking as I don't recall doing it in my final year.

I am sure my pooch would have hoovered up the rice pudding! :rotfl: She eats and thinks later! :rotfl::rotfl:

PIC grapes, nuts, rice and coconut along with plenty of liquids are very helpful. You could have a handful of grapes and nuts, a curry with coconut and rice or some hobnobs made with oats and some coconut
