I don't 'know' linux, just enough to make it do what I need to do really. I'm not much of a techie myself and I'm in awe of those who are :D

Has anyone heard from 3v3? If so pass on my best wishes x

Also I just bumped into this five minute leftovers bread pudding recipe and thought of you lot!

GQ - if your phone line is in another room you can run a phone extension lead to it rather than go wireless if you prefer. We have a reel type extension lead that runs from phone line downstairs right the way upstairs to living room and plug our router into that. We run the laptops wirelessly as they have built in Wifi but have the PC hard wired as it were directly into the router - incidentally all the techies I know recommend having at least one computer/laptop non wireless for banking, as its much more secure.:)

Having squeezed in eight loads of washing today, cooked a full roast, tidied kitchen, dining room and living room, not to mention rearrange kitchen worktops am now exhausted. Braved the ice to collect DS and its now starting to melt. Still no snow. :(

Picked up a drill in Mr S on Friday reduced to £19.99 - seems to be ideal for what I need, trouble is I cant decide which job to do first :)

I would think you could add things like sultanas. :D
  • Afternoon Toughies, I think we are very lucky down here in my part of Hampshire as although it has been very very cold we had rain last night and not snow. I looked out of the study window at lunchtime and saw what I thought was a Thrush in the silver birch in the front garden , then it was joined by another six birds all the same, looking a bit more closely I realised they were Redwings. I think they must have exhausted the wild foods down here as they are normally found out in the farming country. When I took the lurcher for his afternoon walk I found that all the left on bush Hawthorn and Ivy berries had been taken so I think I shall have to up the frequency of feeding in the garden. Lean times for birdies methinks!

Just back from big House, where I get to play with the Aga! Cooked a lovely leg of lamb and all the bits for Mr & Mrs OG, Ive got half of it left - any ideas what to do with it? I would make Cawl but fussy OH does not like 'thin' broth, and I refuse to spoil it by thickening it up!

I first played with PCs in 1984 - work shoved me in front of one and said 'make that work' ! So started with writing DOS batch filesand learned as I went along. We had a network to support our Staff Section (HR nowadays) and I had a whole 40 megabytes to carve up into 256 and 512k chunks of disk storage space! I 've got more space than that on my phone now! I ended up running a team of techies and we installed and supported networks in our offices, I loved it but they eventually outsourced the work :( I did that for about 13 years, it was a great job.

If you want to play with Linux you can load up a pen drive with Ubuntu and boot from it - I found this really useful when a virus knacked my windows install, and my netbook would not load up. Getting a pen drive with Ubuntu to work was easier than trying to get dos to work on the pendrive. I was able to access C: drive and copy off vital stuff before attempting to get rid of the virus (not backed up as per!). I kept the pendrive with Ubuntu on it for future use, I'm bound to need it!

Brrrrrrr, it has really cooled down again now. I'm on the sofa in OH's large hoodie and heating on.

He is making a chocolate torte in the kitchen - a man of many talents :D

Other than that, a very lazy Sunday during which I finally got to test the Yaktrax going out to get the papers (brilliant!).

GQ - glad to hear you had a great evening. Chatted up on the way there eh? ;) Go swanky CS outfits!

I'm now considering 'communal shopping'. My flat is the downstairs one of two in a converted house. Upstairs lives the lovely J, an older lady on her own who's been there for 25+ years and is the epitomy of OS. She makes jams and puddings and leaves us things in the communal hallway. More recently she bought a load of salt and brought it out earlier to de-ice our path with. I got her some scotch from the shops to make hot toddies. She has had the same horrible cold and I didn't want her to venture out & risk slipping.

J is the best neighbour I could wish for. She uses the front garden to grow herbs, to which I can help myself. In return I've started taking her veg waste to add to our compost. Once it's ready I'll share it with her. I'm always coming home to large boxes of fruit and veg in the hall, for her jams, preserves, chutneys etc. J always insists I help myself :) When I saw her earlier before I went to the shops, she told me she has hoards of tinned/dried goods (a rival to GQ?!) and to come and ask if we were ever short.

What occurred to me is that she is always shopping around for good deals at a variety of shops, and our local greengrocer delivers her a veg box each week, as well as sourcing her the 'over ripe' fruit at cheap prices for her jams etc. It could potentially be very economical for us to shop jointly. She has more time to hunt round, and does so anyway, and knows where to get the best deals. In return I could always shop for other or heavier goods in my car as she doesn't have one. We have mentioned getting together to make lists and see what can be shared, but having thought it through this afternoon I'm thinking the idea really does have legs - and I'm quite excited :j

I'd love to support our local greengrocers more. The quality is excellent and they are so friendly, but of course not as cheap as Aldi, but they deliver free locally and with J on hand and them all knowing she loves the reduced stuff, maybe this could work well for us both!

We WILL get our veg patch up and running this year - J is an expert grower so I'm going to solicit her advice and we could share that too when it gets going, but maybe this is a good way to cut costs but improve quality and neighbourly relations :) Am mulling it over as my jumbled ramble must show!

Think I'll have her round for dinner in the week or a nice cup of tea and discuss it properly, yay!

OH still baking, I feel warmer now thank goodness and looking forward to dinner. Any good ideas for pork chops??

Hope everyone has a lovely evening :)
Proud to be a moneysaver :)

My fave way with pork chops is to egg them and dip them in dry stuffing mix to coat, then roast in the over ( with a bit of oil under and a drizzle over) at about 180, 170 fan, until done, 45 - 50 mins max, turning half way, Yummy and makes them more filling!
