Hello, it is really hard to meet people even if you are not shy. .......

Well she just about fell on me in relief and said "How about NOW" THat was over 15 years ago and we have been friends ever since! But the inner battle I had in that car park "Talk to her, give her your number" "I can't" "DO IT" "I can't" :rotfl: Well I'm glad I listened to myself!GOod luck xx

Thanks VJsmum - I do need to do "something" as I am probably getting far too isolated. I turned off my mobile at 6pm on NYE as I didn't want to hear messages from others out & about with the OHs etc. (I'm not completely horrible :D, I do want everyone to have fun, but there are a few times when I don't want to be reminded that I'm home, alone, again.)

Turned it back on this morning & I need not have bothered. Not a single message. So I do need a plan.

I try not to let my sight problems interfere too much, but it does rule some things out unless I have help & I'm rubbish at asking for help. I'd love to join a walking group, but I'd need someone next to me every step & I don't want to ask a stranger to help (& my friend works so she couldn't come).

I've gone to my local "blind" meetings, but I'm easily the youngest there by 30 years. They are a nice bunch, but (luckily) none of them have had sight problems at my age - when they hear I'm a single parent with 2 young kids & years to go until retirement age then they tell me how bad they feel for me, how they would struggle with possibly not "seeing" their kids grow up etc., & how awful my situation is, how I'll have to watch every penny etc. I know they mean well, but I know how rubbish my situation is/could deteriorate to & I really don't need reminding :(

I guess I'm just going to have to accept that I will either be lonely at home (happy most of the time pottering) or will have to swallow my pride & ask for help in RL. Maybe I'll have some conversations with myself....

I'm off for a walk (usually fine on pavements it is the rough ground that gets me as I can't often judge what is flat & what isn't & tend to trip) as the rain has stopped here.

Hope you all have a good day!
And I find that looking back at you gives a better view, a better view...

    Morning everyone,

I am going to try and teach myself to crochet this year with youtube.
I can knit and do card making,do cook from scratch but I want to do so much more. This year we are going to grow vegs as last year was our first and we did ok with what we grew.

There is only the OH and me here, our children are all over seas.
What family we do have here dont get how we live, we dont smoke , dont do the going out for drinks or meals. All they seem to do is go out and shop all the time.

So we pretty much lead a quite life, so I have plenty of time on my hands to learn new things.Has anyone got any other suggestions of what else I can learn to do at home.

I love this thread its so friendly, loved all your jokes.

Lavenderbees - yes cut the sugar to 1 tablespoon/3 teaspoons and if it turns out OK try cutting it a bit more...
    Just so you know:
    1 teaspoon = 5ml;
    1 Tablespoon = 15ml;
    therefore, 3 teaspoons = 1 Tablespoon :D
    (and one dessert spoon = 10ml ;) )

    I'll butt out now :o

Well I've had a lie -in after a disturbed night with pooch acting strangely, up and down like a yo-yo and then hiding under the bed and not being able to get out! She's 11 almost 12 so that might have a lot to do with it.

Thank you lavenderbees and prepareathome for your positive stories about laser surgery. It encouraged me to send her a positive text this morning about it (kind of :rotfl:) and I will try and and push any forebodings away and not be naggy.

Grandma247 thanks for the info about the diet and the link, have bought the book for my kindle and already started having a look through it, seems very interesting and full of information so will have a proper read and hopefully start following it as my weight with health problems and spending so much time propped up in bed has gone through the roof, I am size 18 and wouldn't dare say what I weight, never dieted in my life as my active lifestyle used to keep me slim and fit so its very hard to do so now, also got into bad habit of eating rubbish on bad days as hubby not a cook and so if I am not up to cooking I end up eating crisps, biscuits and sandwiches yet never used to eat more than a couple of biscuits a year so this year that has got to change with more meals frozen ready so even hubby can heat them up for me ( he offers tins of soup, toast, sandwich and pizza).

Sun is shining here and its actually dry, now if it can just stay dry till my hair dries I will go out and plant the 4 holly bushes I have had sitting to be put in ground for over a month, usually by time I am up to doing so its raining again.

Got to work out my budget for the year as not done it properly yet and do a meal plan, never done one in my life so that will be an interesting challenge. Always avoided them as I hate planning what I will eat on each night - hubby would happily have same thing on same night year in year out but not me, and of course meal planning doesn't mean I have to do that but in my mind it always does feel like that - daft I know.

I have just splashed out 79p on a white noise track as we live on a busy main road and its becoming busier and with spending so much time in bed and my room at front of house I am finding the noise is really getting me down, you hardly hear it in living room but for some reason up here even with windows closed its bad, and that is with double glazing, I swear its nosier since getting that fitted than it was with the old single glazed windows. Snag also is I love having windows so that lets even more noise in. At moment track is playing on laptop and admit traffic noise although I can hear it is much softer and white noise although if I think about it is noisy, if I just ignore it, it disappears - they say takes a few days for you to get used to it.

Just debating whether to get hair dryer out and dry hair with it, if it works, not used it in years so can get out while its still dry, as I cannot believe we will not have rain today. Snag with long hair is it takes so long to dry. A bit to cold out there to go out with wet hair I think as its only 4C even though sun is shining and sky is blue.

No shopping will be done till Thursday as broke, but plenty in thankfully and then I want to just take out the £50 I have decided for the weeks GC and stick to it, that will be a first if I do but needs must.

    Right better move myself

Someone blew up your camper van . Thank goodness you weren't in it. Thought I'd heard it all...

Fuddle - I quite like your avatar & love your username. My gran always used to say her head was in a fuddle & I hadn't heard it for years until I came on here.

Oh dear :( Just bought some cords in the F@t F@ce sale :o

In my defence I have just donated 2 pairs to charity because they were soooo dated and I have money from dad for my birthday so that's what I got.

I have a budget for clothes this year, that i am really going to try not to exceed. And FF are good quality, it's places like the supermarkets and primarni I am going to avoid. Justifying myself? Much? :rotfl:

Doesn't count if you bought them with b'day money surely. No justification needed :rotfl:

I like FF & Weird Fish stuff as it lasts so well. Even their T's seem to survive the wash much better than other makes.
And I find that looking back at you gives a better view, a better view...

Mardatha these are just some of the sites I looked at here here and here.

Prepareathome I have had arthritis for a long long time and when I was in my twenties I had a crisis with it and was like a little old lady of 90. I was definately not overweight then either as I walked everywhere. I was sent to a naturopath by my friend who was appalled that my own doctor told me it was just a virus ( I was bad for about a year). I was put on a raw diet and in six weeks I was so much better and continued it for a while after but life got busy and I was almost back to square one by this time but worse in some ways because of the damage to my joints. The last two winters I put on weight after falling in the snow the first winter. I was too scared to walk outside.

I did get a glide walker from freecycle and that has helped a lot but the pain and other problems remained.

I have found it easy to do the diet and the main adjustment has been snacks and breakfast. I have mixed nuts, fruit , cream cheese or peanut butter on celery or ryvita thins for snacks and will get some other snacks sorted once life is back to normal after the hol. I do not automatically reach for cereal for breakfast now. I have eggs or a cheese or meat sandwich but limit the bread to 2 slices.
I have two portions of starch a day which is either two slices of granary bread or 3/4 of a cup of cooked rice, pasta or potato.
Whole grain anything is better than white. I also try and have three meals and three snacks a day so i do not feel too hungry.

Unbeknown to me my Ddil has been on a wheat free diet for seven weeks because she has had problems with her tummy and she has found her energy levels have increased as well as her problems clearing up. Now she is finding that even the tiniest bit of wheat brings the problems straight back so she and Ds are constantly scanning packets etc. for ingredients. He bought her a box of chocs yesterday but she could not eat them as they had wheat on the label so she brought some for us and Ds took the rest to work. She didn't loose out though because Dh gave her his whiskey chocs that did not have wheat in :)

Meal planning is just forward thinking. I saw an excellent system on a blog that I subscribe to here.

For those of you thinking about low GI/Starch/carb diets.

I started the Atk1ns diet in 2003 after years of trying all sorts of cutting cals/fat/starving etc that did not work for me.

The A diet is low (very to start) carb and high fat which a lot of people will tell you is very bad. I lived on the A diet for three years, lost loads of weight, ate pretty much what I wanted (within the rules) and loved it. I only stopped when I had a hysterectomy on doctors orders, then when I was fit it no longer seemed to work for me

Within days of starting I had bags of energy (had been terribly tired all the time) and all my joint aches and pains went.

I very quick lost about 2 stone, then gradually another 2.

You can eat very well, it is very healthy as lots of green veg and unprocessed meat/fish, and despite the high fat many on the diet find their bad cholesterol levels go down and the good cholesterol goes up.

It is a pain to find replacements for bread and pastry, and sugary stuff is out so if you want sweet you need to use sweeteners, but all these things can be overcome and the benefits can be great - if the diet suits you. Some do very well on it, others really struggle. I personally believe this is down to how individuals process carbs/fat in their bodies. I do better eating 'fat' for energy, just suits me better. Unfortunately I am back stuffing carbs in my face, I need to think about cutting them out a gain to see how I get on.

Anyway I can bore for England on the subject, if anyone wants some ideas for menus etc, or tips on how to adapt their diet, I am happy to help, migh spur me on!

Mumto2monkeys, you've put it in a nutshell. She's 25 (emotional age varies)...he has never really taken parental responsibility. He has no idea what she is like when in pain and frightened...he should know, but doesn't care. My dd's had ops and I have not dared moved from the hospital because I know as soon as she comes around she will be hysterical and calling for me. The nurses told me I should go and rest last time, but I wouldn't, even though I hadn't eaten all day. Anyway, as I expected, a nurse came looking for me and took me to recovery. Once she saw me she calmed down.

I am really sorry about your dd's cancer. Do you have a date when treatment will finish? I can only imagine how tough that is for you all. Bless your heart for replying and understanding . :A I know laser eye surgery is a minor blip in comaparison.

Thanks Byatt. She has around another 18 months of chemo to go. It's approximately 2.2years of treatment for a girl, but they tag any delay time onto the end, and she's had a few delays when she's not been up to treatment. We're getting there. It's the uncertainty I find hard. I was working FT and on a good income (main earner) before, now money is diminishing and it's my employment future I worry about. Once she's better, I will probably struggle to get work. I realise that I'm not alone in this predicament though. As all of you know, these are tough times for us all. :(
