in my experience Xmas eve trains in the evening are empty and i'd have thought even more so this year with it being a Saturday so people will travel on Friday or earlier.

Train companies are obliged to get you to your final destination or offer accommodation and being Xmas Eve I really wouldn't worry they will look after you I'm sure. Even on a normal day they are very aware of "last" trains and go to extra effort to hold connections or arrange alternative transport promptly.

Last year I arrived home after the last train towards London had left and there was a very confused foreign chap who hadn't realised there would be an early finish. The driver of my train was straight on the phone to his control working out where to put him in a taxi to so he could pick up a train at their cost even though it really wasn't their problem. Lovely to see Xmas spirit in action :)
