Beware Vista HYPE - DRM & Spyware

  • The only thing worth having in Vista is DX10 and thats only because Micro$oft wants to you to upgrade. Aero interface? Pretty, but hardly essential. MS is already working on Vista's successor due to be released in 2009. Spend a couple hundred odd quid now only to have to repeat it again in 2 years time? I think I'll stick with XP and think about Vienna or whatever they'll be calling it then in 2 years time.

Before anyone asks yes, I have tried it. I've been trialling RC2 for the last few months. If you're a gamer forget it with DX10 graphics cards: nVidia havn't ironed out the problems with their drivers yet there are way too many problems still. Not to mention my sound card drivers are still in beta!

Do you have any eveidence for that? I genuinely want to know, it seems strange that it took MS six years to bring out a replacement for XP and then all of a sudden they're able to churn out new OSs? And even if that did turn out to be true, the entire "I'll wait until the next big thing around the corner" justification in IT is just not logical, there'll always be something else down the road. The shortest time between MS OS releases was about 18 months so can really blame MS publicizing the longest awaited, most expensive to develop OS in their history.

Thanks sco0ter, I found it myself when I had a quick search, but it isn't really a firm release date I've seen estimates of 2011 and of course it isn't as big of change in OS as XP to Vista is. When was the last time Microsoft hit an initial date announcement or came anywhere close? I reckon three years at least and that seems reasonable to me for a new OS to be released and certainly isn't reason enough to "wait for and avoid upgrading OS now".

  • Successor to Vista due in 2009 The reason for Vista's 6 year protracted birth is all the security loopholes in XP that delayed Vista's release: they always planned a fast turnover for Vista and now thats sorted the plan is 2009 for the next release.

At the end of the day it's up to you. If you want the latest, shiny new OS that will slow down your PC and gaming in particular by up to 33% in the reports I've read then thats fine. I can understand the need for shiny things my latest PC build has a 7950 GTX and an E6600 Core2Duo processor and I expect I'll upgrade that by the time Vienna is due out. Personally I like things that speed up my PC though and not slow it down.

It's end of 2009, and typically there'll probably be a delay. So you could be talking more than 3 years quite easily. Also Vienna may not be a completely new system, but instead an upgrade for Vista.

"Up to 33%". In a lot of cases it's very similar in terms of performance. And in a few it actually beats XP.

You have an E6600 and a 7950GTX!!! If you noticed any difference between XP and Vista I'd be very surprised. The only difference will be benchmark tables, not real world experiences.

In that case, you'd be including BSD, Linux, Firefox, virtually every piece of software I can think of. As computers become more powerful, software becomes more complex. They walk arm in arm.

Ok so the BSD/Linux example, they haven't quite jumped up the mark as much as Microsoft. But try Vista and you'll be pleasantly surprised. It's not all about shiny buttons and animations. The interface has developed and is much more pleasant and easier to use. And it's not just Windows that's doing it, Apple always have done and Linux has Beryl/Compiz. I use Ubuntu at home, but we're looking to move to Vista at work, and it's a very competent OS from the trial so far. There are obvious downfalls, but the main ones for me would be what they didn't include in it (when they should have).

One thing that gets me about the "Vienna" product.... Blackcomb and Longhorn were being built at the same time and also I remember about 2 years ago in one of the really early reviews that Blackcomb was actually going to be new windows server edition based on the Longhorn (vista) code
