Can anyone recommend a good knife set?

Can anyone recommend a good knife set because I know you guys know what to stay away from and what are decent knifes to buy.

They will be used every day so I don't mind spending for a decent set.

Thanks

Global or Wustoff make excellent stuff. Its not cheap but will last a lifetime.

I was not keen on Global. If you can find them in this country Chef brand knives made by Mercer corp, Germany are incredible. I have never had a knife so sharp...

Stay away from anything that cannot be sharpened or things like this. Sabatier are generally an all round decent knife. I used Victorinox when I butchered, many years ago...

Do you need a knife set? Some never get used. I bought single knives that I need everyday. The bread knife is a cheap serrated Richardson, but works great. The carving knife is Mercer. The paring knife Global etc....
For knife sets, try TK Maxx.

Bet I confused you even more?

I find myself using a Global G2 (large knife) and GSF22 (small knife) almost every day. They are much better than the cheap knives I used to use. I decided against a set as there were knives I thought I would never use. Instead I bought the G2, the GSF22 and the GS11 which I use for fish. The Global water sharpener works well.

Buy Global if you are rich, but you don't really need them. Sabatier is a name found on many knives from many different makers. I have a set of Stellar Sabatier which are five years old, and they can be sharpened on an oil stone or every day on a steel. They are razor sharp, the bread knife is superb, but the filleting knives do not have enough flex. Some of the best knives are used by butchers, and have coloured plastic, non slip handles, and you can buy them around Smithfields in London.

I bought this set from global (not from Amazon-I bought a set from a marketplace seller on there first, and they were fakes, he denied it, it took a threat of trading standards before he agreed to refund in full including postage, I bought from a local department store)

I use the GS-5 chopper all the time, the flexible one(GS-11) is great for filleting fish, the G-2 is a wonderful carving knife, the bread knife gets through my sourdough crusts easily (I have a cheap richardson bread knife I thought was fine until I started making sourdough) The paring knife (GS-38) gets used fairly often too. I have one of the minosharp sharpeners which is great, I sharpen them every couple weeks or so, or if I notice they are getting a little duller. I would love to get the GS-5 sharpened professionally on a whetstone, as I have noticed it seems to dull slightly more quickly than it used to. (I have had these for 4 or 5 years)

The magnetic rack is great, as it keeps the worksurface free. I also have a big chopper thing (chinese style, name is escaping me at the moment! :o) which fits on the rack also. I paid about £200 for the global set, and it did include the bread knife unlike one of the amazon reviews)

I use Analon and 'world greatest knifes'. Perfect
  • Picked ours up in TK Maxx (depends when they have them in though) - was something like a £90 knife set for £20. Think ours are Sabatier branded but the kitchen's a good 10 steps away to check and my chair's comfy!

  • I don't mind spending a decent amount because I want a decent set that's going to last and not go blunt and rusty after a few uses.

    Thanks for the replies :)
