  • I have been looking at lots of sites.

But I think Open Office doesnt do Outlook equvalent.

Also, I only have a netbook (HP mini, atom processor) so I don't want to slow it down.

If you like Firefox get Thunderbird(and Lightning addon for calendar), and use Google Calendar with that. I also links well with mobile phones too.

I had a look at the websites for Openoffice and Libre.

Both offer Word and Spreadsheet and say they are compatible with MS. Does anyone know which is simplier to use and uses less resources?

If I get rid of avg and install Avast, which do I do first?

Then keep Firefox and get Thunderbird. That's an add on right?

If I went for the whole Ubuntu thing I'd have to get rid of windows operating system thats on my netbook, right?

Download and save Avast to your PC but do not install. Get rid of AVG and then reboot. No need to connect to the Internet at this stage. Install Avast(untick options to install Google Chrome or to let Google take over your Home Page) and then reconnect to the Internet.

You can install Ubuntu using a special installer, so that you have a choice of which OS to use when you start up. Don't bother with that now.
  • I will give it a try in the morning. Thanks so far:)

Forget Ubuntu for now(you can have both it and windows but not worth it yet). Thunderbird is an email client (as is outlook and outlook express), and it comes from the same stable as FF but it is standalone. Lightning is an add-on for thunderbird giving calendar functions.
If changing AVG-->Avast 1st download avast. Then use the ACG removal tool, then install avast.

Libre/Open Offices are from the same base , but Libre Office is now looking the more favourable because Oracle now own OpenOffice and most of the developers jumped ship to start LibreOffice .

  • Excuse me for re-opening the thread.

I never got round to installing Ubuntu on my netbook and it has been stolen.

I have been offered a secondhand laptop with a formatted HD and no software or OP.

Could you please point me in the right direction to get it set up.

I want to give Ubuntu or Linux a try. I don't want to load too much onto the laptop or slow it down. It is a 5 year old machine as far as I know.

You could start at http://www.ubuntu.com/download/ubuntu/download, where you can download and create a bootable CD, which gives you the option of running from the CD or installing onto the computer.
You will obviously need a CD writer on the computer you download to and something like ImgBurn to actually burn the CD.
