Hi again, Ive got a free day thanks to the snow so thought I would have another go at it.
Anyhow I have managed to trun it on, but not in safe mode , and it still has loads of errors. As theres nothing much on there I am worried about keeping, I am thinking that a total clean of the hard driv eand then to start again loading windows might be good. I have the boot disk and the windows ME disk, but also have windows XP disk that came with this pc (the working one, not the kids thats got me) could I clean the hard disk of the one with me and then put xp on it using the same code as this pc has?
If so just how do I reformat the hard disk, I have tried reformat in dos, but it sayes somrthing is using c so aborts.

Having never had ME I can only point to a site guiding you through the install, here.

Once the installs complete, as long as you've got the drivers for your modem/router, you can download all your other drivers from the net.

You'd need to know what soundcard and graphics cards currently installed to obtain the correct drivers though.

If you've got net access on another computer, you can always come here for assistance if need be. There's plenty of people on here ready to help.

That site is really helpful, and I have tried to follow their instructions but only get as far as the a:\ prompt where it askes me to type format c: and my pc sayes thats not a recognised command.

editted to note that I found this on windows site and tried it and nothing, but restarted pc and the format command worked and is now reformatting as I type.

You could install XP, but legally you would need a new key. Also you would need to check the spec of the machine to make sure it would run XP.

Windows ME has always been regarded as pretty much the worst OS Microsoft ever released. You can get a copy of windows 98 Se off ebay pretty cheaply nowadays, that would probably be a better bet.

However if your machine is up to running XP that would be the best option, although of course ME is free so is the best MoneySaving choice!

  • Glad we could help.

Have you any idea what make/model your soundcard is?

Is it integrated into the motherboard?

Do you know the model number of the PC from MESH?
