You have "pc" (sic) in your title and start your thread with "evening all." I'll give you my first response for the sake of humour if nothing else. You need to set up your new PC with
- a uniform
- a baton
- a pair of handcuffs
- a radio
- a stab-proof vest
- a notebook
I suspect thus doesn't help, but I hope will raise a chuckle.0 -
Donny is that is South Yorks
, anyhow, set her old PC up to use file sharing and tell her to occasionally switch it on and use it for saving all her important stuff there as a backtop incase the lappy goes t-ts up.

If the laptop is primarily for keeping in touch, that could involve sending photos as e-mail attachments? Photos come straight off the camera at huge physical size and file size and some people can't easily get to grips with the necessity or procedures for resizing them for e-mail attachments. Perhaps the easier the resizing operation can be made the better if not an experienced computer user.
There are ways of resizing without installing extra software in Windows 7 but there is perhaps nothing more simple than using the image re-sizer linked to below. When installed, just right-click on an image file and choose the size. The image-resizer powertoy was made for Windows XP but this is a re-written version for Windows 7. 32-bit and 64-bit versions are available.

Glad to give you a smile too. Showing your age though aren't you;)
I have been talking to a few of you for a couple of days now over various concerns, one which ended with me talking my Dell lappy to pieces to remove the dust, successfully I may add, hence my social greeting.
I think she will be receiving more than sending pictures from her son. I use Outlook 2003 (still works so why pay to upgrade) which always offers me the option of which size to send, Not sure what Hotmail offers, as rarely use it. I will load this in though, and hope it is easy to use in case I am not about.
She intends to dispose of the old PC, once I have moved everything off, and will get a 3.5" caddy to make her a USB backup drive with the HDD.

She wants Word, and I have an old Works Disk with Word on which I don't use, so will load Word with that, I know I can get OpenOffice free, but she can use Word . . .
While here I take it with an old PC it will be IDE and not SATA caddy I need? Or do I need to check on the PC?
If so easy instructions to check please, as I will not be near it until January, and need to take the caddy with me (she lives overseas), and I am there fairly frequently.

DG - later on (after work) I can send you my brief guide for those. I may also have a multi-user licensed copy of office 2000 somewhere if it's any help........Gettin' There, Wherever There is......

you can find out from Device Manager (right click My Computer > Properties > hardware). Under disk drives it'll have the make and model of the disk, a quick google will tell you what it is.0 -
